Yes I,ve got them,,start off ok then after 6 or seven balls on the range, the shanks invade, then I just can't stop doing it with every iron, what is going on ??, whats the answer??
Welcome to GR. The dreaded S word huh, I can feel for you. Post back and let me know how the ball is flying...dead right, straight then curves right. Also, what do you normally shoot. This info will help a bit.
You're probably just coming over the top with the clubface closed. Too much upper body in your swing, along with too strong of a grip can contribute to the "S" word. Thanks.

You are going to have to get over the mental aspect of it. What started the turnaround for me (and yes you have to be very disciplined) is to spend two full range sessions...one of which I hit nothing but 1/4 to 1/2 shots getting back to the basics. The second time around I went 1/4 -> 1/2 -> 3/4. Try and resist the urge to do full swing shots b/c all it will take is one S on a swing to kill your confidence again. You might even go so far as to stick with the 3/4 for a bit and work your way to the full shot.
thanks for the advice. in answer to Chris's questions, when o start to chop it right, it goes dead right,,sometimes topped as well,,I usually shoot in the mid 90's,,I,ll try thr 1/2 and 3/4 swings tonight at the range
For me, when I was doing it earlier this year, I'm confident that the reason was that I was losing my my spine angle during the swing. I would swing back, and my shoulders would drop down thus losing my spine angle and as a result my hands would be farther from my body at impact then they were at address.
Just try to keey your shoulders level.
Another good drill is to set up two balls side by side. One ball will be farther from you at address and the other will be closer to you. Line up to the ball farthest from you and then swing and make contact with the ball closest to you. You wont shank it.
i know that when i start shooting them of the hosel its because my backswing has become to quick. if my tempo gets messed up the ball goes where ever it wants
great, I,ll try that tonight at the range,,its strange that the first half a dozen balls go great, the it starts, and i can't stop it, its almost like it s in my head.
That's becasue it is . The sh*nks are more mental than they are physical. You just need to get some good shots back under your belt to get your confidence back. Let us know how it goes at the range tonight.
If I start doing the "S word" on the range, I stop immediately. Once it starts, it won't stop!
I had a friend and fairly regular golfing partner about 10-15 years ago who if you said, "shank" he would do it. You almost had to see it to believe it. Bubba was about an 8 handicapper, and nearly gave up the game because of it.
I had the shanks for a bit. I just slowed down my swing and made sure I watched the clubface make contact with the ball. I figured I was getting lazy with something, maybe because I was tired or it was the new clubs I was hitting. So I deliberately slowed it down and made sure to make solid contact. Shanks didn't last too long. Hope that helps.
Shanking comes from coming over the top. Make sure at the top of your backswing you drop your hands toward your back hip to start the downswing. Also you may want to close your stance and shoulders a little bit to help you come from the inside. You should probably put a shoe box down and then place the ball right up against it and practice hitting balls like that, it will force you to come inside. Make sure the ball is within a half inch of the box. If you hit the box you are coming outside the line. This almost caused me to quit the game until I went to a teacher who put me on video tape and showed me what was causing it. I have not shanked a ball since. Good Luck!

Could also be from coming to far from the inside, or losing spine angle, or standing to close, or standing to far, or...well you get the idea.
It went pretty good at the range,,,picturing the club face square at inpact taking a mental photo, helped me the most, also when it came back, i went to 1/2 swings to get it straight again,,but short chipping is imposible using my arms now, the only way I can get them to go straight is by swinging with my wrists,,,,sand iron and pitcing wedge,,gonna have to practise that a lot.
thanks for some great advice guys

I used to have the s....s all the time, when I started out. Once a while I pick up one of the clubs from my starter set and and I look with amazement at the pureed grips (I used to grip too tightly) and with even more amazement at the hosel areas of these clubs, which look like a different s-word, as a result of s....ing so much. I managed to rid myself of this problem (I am not sure how). I read with terror how this problem returns once in a while for many golfers, but it hasn't for me (knock on titanium).
