I used to have exactly the same problem: Mid-irons also (my typical practice range clubs) with unbelievable hang-time and height, but lacking distance. I also used to leave a lot of ball in my grooves after a solid hit: No need for impact tape or powder! It made me wonder whether I was hitting the ball too hard.
I did not realize that this might be caused by my hands not being in front of the ball at impact at the time (although I did suspect that might be the case), but I fixed the problem by simply swinging a little easier.
I am sometimes tempted to use that ultra-high mid-iron shot on a short par-3, because the ball flight is so impressive, but I have so far successfully resisted the temptation, for fear of re-introducing that swing flaw. Also, if the shot would come off normally I would be way over the green.
