Probably the reason is that when a right handed player, bends their left arm on their backswing, that bend will have to straighten on the downswign to get the club back to the proper position at address. If the arm is extended too soon in the downswing, the club path will be more from the outside with the clubface left open. By keeping your arm straight, this extra motion is not present and you approach the ball from the inside with the clubface squaring up better.
This is always something I work on at the range and I've found that in my case, I have to make sure I stretch out the rear deltoid, upper tricep, and upper latissimus on my right side (I'm left handed). I also concentrate on maintianing clearance between my chin and chest as my tendancy is to want to bury my chin in my chest, which limits my rotation on my backswing and causes a breakdown of my right arm.
