graphite to steel

Hi,
I am new to this forum. Thanks for having me.
I recently changed from Callaway BB Fusion firm graphite shafts to Mizuno Mp 60 with DG S300. It seems that my swing has fallen apart since the change. I really want to love these Mizuno clubs and I know that it is me and not them. Any tips for easing the transition from Graphite to Steel. I have been hitting the ball on the toe of the club, shanking, losing distance, and I just cant seem to find the center of the club face. I wonder if the heavier shafts have just thrown my timing off or is it just a mental thing. Either way I would appreciate any tips to ease this transition.
Thanks,
David

Cool

Go back to ground zero. Take your 9 iron or PW, and make some nice easy 1/2 swings until you feel comfortable with that. Then go to 3/4 swings, and then full swings. Nice and slow. The extra weight is what's killing you, I had the same problem when I hit a few balls with a 9 iron with a graphite shaft after years of playing steel. Have no fear, it's just a matter of getting used to the extra weight. It may take a few hours of hitting balls and practice swings, but that's about it. Did you DEMO those new clubs with steel shafts before you purchased them, or did you do this blind? Good luck with your new sticks.

it was blind. I am 26 and pretty strong I hit my 5 iron 180-185. I had firm graphite shafts and decided that I would benefit from going to steel even if I lost a little distance. But I think I finally started to put it together last night. Just a matter of finding my tempo with new clubs. They were a blind purchase, I decided to get the MP-60's based on reviews here and elsewhere.
Thanks,
David

i agree with OnePutt, slow it down and relax, with the extra weight, your forcing the club to get the same club head speed wich isn't necessary. you will get the same distance with the extra weight and a slightly slower ss as you will with a lighter club and a faster ss. eventually, your wrists will stenghten enough to where you won't even notice the extra weight.

I agree with both OnePutt and Mikey300 that the weight of the new clubs will take some getting used to. I too went from graphite to steel shafts and it took a good part of the season to get adjusted and learn a new tempo.

You said that you bought these "blind" - does that mean you weren't fitted? You should keep in mind that graphite-shafted irons are typically longer than steel-shafted ones. The difference may be only 1/2", but will it will definitely affect your ball striking. If you weren't fitted, I'd go to back to the store you bought them from to get fitted, or to a reputable club builder.

I did have them fitted. I am short, about 5'6". Im on the verge of needing 1/2" short. I opted to keep the standard length and just flatten the clubs by 2 degrees instead of 1 to make up the diff. I am doing much better since I posted this. I also found the from the 5 iron down the MP 60's are 2 degrees weaker than the Big Bertha Fusion set that I had before. Just need to get used to the differences. Im definitely getting there though. Ive found that I can rarely blame a problem on my equipment. Its usually me.
