Putting stroke

Hey, i have a 6ft putting mat at home, i get 9/10 on average in the hole, but when on the course i dont seem to be able to get those straught putts, from 6 feet. Can anyone help me out. I know that i dont hit the ball square on, because it always goes a little to the right, as if im slicing it, can anyone tell me how to solve this, or any excercises that may help, thank you

Practice on a different surface and move between each putt.

Standing in one spot and repeatedly putting over-and-over isn't good. You get into a groove... A groove you wont be in when you're on the course.

Thanks, and how can i get rid of my slice, will that just take time, to get right, or is there an excercise that will help?

Search these forums for "slice" in the title. It should give you something to work with.

One huge thing is to make sure that you are hitting the putts on the sweet spot of your putter. To identify the sweet spot, hold it up with one hand and poke or jab at parts of the putter with your other hand. At the one extreme, note how the putter reacts when you poke the toe -- it should go back but also twist. You should get the same when you poke the heel. You want to find the point in the middle of the club -- which is not necessarily the half-way point, depending on weighting, shaft postiion, etc. -- where when you poke the club, the face goes straight back. Many putters' line marked on the head is wrong, though many are right. You will want to check to make sure that this twisting of the putter head is not what is causing the slice. If your sweet spot is different from the mark or line the manufacturer put on your putter, it is perfectly legal to put your own mark on it so that you know where your sweet spot is.

If it is not the impact causing the slice, then is it your hand/stroke. One of the best drills to make sure that you are putting straight back and forth is to putt between barriers. I use my 3 and 4 irons. Lay them on the ground, and at the beginning, about the width of your putter head plus and inch or so. Then, putt from the grip of the iron to the head. If the putter hits the clubs, then you obviously did not putt in a straight line. You can use anything that is straight, like two by four boards or boxes or anything, what you are looking for here is feedback as to the straightness of your putting stroke. As you get better, you should be able to make that 1 clearance down to half inch, quarter inch, and so on until the straight back and forth is completely ingrained.

Smile Slice!

I used to hit my putts to the right a bit. It turns out I was opening the clubface just a slight bit at impact. Once I got it straightened out, I was fine.

Another thing with putting mats and also driving range mats is that there is a straight edge of the mat aimin' right at the target that's prolly being used subconsciously.

Yes this is what i have found, it helps you line the putt up, thats why i use my carpet and a small coin, then there is more space for error, also after a while the matt become predictable and easy.

If you have carpet you can do like I do and place mat at one end of room and putt from other end so you cant use the mat to judge.

I dont know if this is the case for you but sometimes balls are completly center and when hit they can curve off a little. If you are consistlently missing you might be opening the club face a little.

I am a novice/beginner but I will give my $0.02 worth:

Most common reason for missing a straight putt IMO is malalignment. I recommend drawing lines on the golf ball and aligning the shot before setting up.

Crawford, lift up the mat and place a small towel(one that will raise the carpet in a small area about a quarter inch gradually) somewhere between you and your target. Create your own breaks. Because you can place the towel anywhere under the mat and create the size of break you'll have to read the mat like you would a normal green.
