whats your grip?

So i went for my first of my fall learning lessons at Golftown and the first thing we looked at was my grip. I learned that I was not gripping the club properly and oh boy did it feel awful at first. we touched on set up and pre shot routine. I barley even hit balls today. I was using a interlock before today but with the new grip an overlap feels much better. What style are you using and why??

Not trying to be a wise guy. This is just an observation. I've learned something playing golf for years with many different types of players. What will get your scores down is the short game. Interlocking grip verses overlapping won't do much either way...but the time you spend working on making the overlap feel normal might be a distraction from better scoring...when those hours could be spent learning to chip within 4 feet...9 out of 10 times.

I 've been using the interlocking grip for the past several years. It gives me better control and makes my hands feel/act as a single unit. I spend most of my practice time on my short game too.

Ditto!! On the first two responses....nothing takes the place of practice.
I have been using the interlocking grip for years.

I've used the overlapping grip since I started playing nearly 60 years ago. Switched to a "full-fingered" grip for a year in the 1980's when I had dislocated my left index finger and it wouldn't take the stress. My current grip is still overlapping, but a few years ago I began to place the club in the palms of my hands rather than on the fingers. I have observed that players with relatively small hands or short fingers are more apt to use an interlocking grip (i.e. Jack Nicklaus). And the grip of Greg Norman is a combination of the two.

FWIW, I think the grip is the foundation of the golf swing - be it interlocking or overlapping. If your instructor is ensuring your overlapping grip is correct, not too strong or too weak, your overall golf game will improve. Learning the correct way to put your hands on the club is not time wasted.

There is no substitute for practice, but you've got to practice with a grip that is fundamentally sound.

And yes, I know there are exceptions.

10 finger grip here. Tried to switch to the overlap and never could get use to it. I know it's not the ideal grip, but it works for me.

Jack Nicklaus is a big proponent of the overlocking style. Reading one of his books was the thing that got me to try it...I wish I had learned it years ago.
But, whichever grip you decide to learn with, get someone to show it to you correctly...it will save you a lot of heartaches if you start off with the right grip, be it overlapping or interlocking, or even the 10 finger baseball grip. But do yourself a favor and get some pro to show you the RIGHT way.

I used to interlock as a kid, but changed to overlap around the age of 16. Wont ever go back to interlock.

I have always used an interlocking grip, except for putting I use a reverse overlap on the greens.
