I've been told, and I know, that my swing is very "handsy". Meaning I flip my wrists to close the clubface, and therefore must time my swing well to hit a good shot. This leads to a lot of inconsistency. This might be a stretch, but does anybody have any drills for fixing this?
I've always been very handsy with a short backswing. At 65 I play to scratch and have had a rather successful amateur career which I hope will continue into the future. My only secret to is that my swing is dependably repeatable. Look at the endless variety of swings on the pro tours. If you tried to each one of your kids Lee Trevino's swing, you'd probably be arrested. But what a career he has had.
I think there are "degrees of handsy" and AggieFreak is describing inconsistency because of it. I don't know a drill, but I think work to firm your left side all the way down to your left wrist (assuming you are right handed) would help. Mind you, I did not say tension, I said firm.
Like the other posters, I am a little handsy, too. You are right to want to control it for consistent shots, though.
When you say you are handsy do you mean that you are not using body for power,if so then try this exercise even without a club, take a backswing nice and slowly, turn your shoulders and concentrate on your back to the target at top of the swing, then start downswind and follow through notice your shoulder turn and finish full follow through till your right shoulder now faces target,i find using my body gave me straighter shots as when i get handsy then sometimes my hands get ahead of the ball with driver thus leaving a dragging behind open clubface,i can do a hook as above with crossing the hands faster but i am a bit hit and miss with it and if too fast then horrendous snap hook.
aggie, I've been a hands player since I had major knee operation. I began viewing old video of the hands players and found the one thing they all did was establish a strong tall follow through. Another thing that might help is begin squeezing a rubber ball or tennis ball. However many times you rep with the right hand, double it for the left(if a right handed player) this will strengthen your hands as well as your wrists.
