i was wondering....for whatever reason, why does it seem the error is more to be too far from the ball.? never hear of one too close to the ball...
Just guessing, I'm not an instructor, but I'd say it is becase the hands only have so far to go back towards you before they start contacting your body, while you can move them out as far as you'd like. Plus, for those who have played baseball/softball like myself, the tendency to extend the hands away from the body is pretty strong.
Good explanation of how far to stand from the ball. Also, if you browse around the same area, it has good examples of ball position relative to your stance.
In my observation, One-Plane Swing Golfers stand further from the ball than those have a Two-Plane Golf swing. Must have something to do with the backswing plane
When I am striking the ball well, my clubhead lies on the floor nicely some 2 lengths of my golf-shoe (2 1/2ft~) in front of me - To be honest, I still believe this is too close (Am working on being a bit further away). I find that I get in more trouble when I stand too close, rather than too far away. Standing too close results in me hitting the most ridiculous hook!
You can't use the hanging arm technique for every club in the bag. Just try it. It only works for a few clubs.
The best way is to keep the hands the same distance from your lower belly for every club. The only thing you change is how much you lean over for the different club lengths. This preserves the geometry of your swing (as it appears to someone standing behind your line) so you can use the same geometry and the same "groove" for every club and every shot, excepting the putter.
I let my arms hang loose with every club. It's vertical with the short irons so my wrists are under my neck, and perhaps more reaching with the driver, so my wrists are under my nose.
I have seen a few people that have their arms straight with the shaft at address. Out of those few, there is only one that drives it 90% straight and long.
It changes with each club. I keep the distance between my hands and lower belly the same, but different club lengths cause me to lean over different amounts. So the ball is farthest and I stand up straightest with the driver. This arrangement allows me to use the same arms to torso arrangement for all clubs. I actually measure the distance between my hands and lower belly to make sure it stays the same.
I tend to stand too close to the ball. To correct that, I measure between my hands and my lower belly, at address, using my right hand as a measuring stick, and I do this for every club in the bag except the putter. How far from the ball I stand varies with each club, but the angle between my arms and torso remains the same, or it should, and I have to check it fairly often to make sure the ball is not getting too close. As a result, I can use the same swing geometry for every club, and keep the same groove. I lean over different amounts for different clubs, but the arms to torso angle stays the same.
