I recently tried lining up my putts by drawing a line on my ball and lining it up. The problem is, I have a lot of trouble lining it up straight. Does anyone have tips for doing this? Also, I have a lot of trouble lining up the ball when it's on a slope. A lot of times, I'll place it and it'll budge slightly because of the slope. I've actually given up already but if anyone has some tips, I'd be happy to hear them.
personally i dont use a line, but sometimes on shorter putts i will line up the words on it... only on shorter putts though, personally i would find it a hassel and a waste of time for longer putts. Best to go for feel and judgement for those
Sometimes hard to keep it exactly straight, I just try to get it close doing the same thing.
the reason I do it, the with line, is to make sure I am rolling the ball properly. Looks like a black circle goes all the way around the ball when I roll it right ;)
I only line the ball up for close or straight putts. I find that it doesn't make sense to line the ball up for a 15 foot putt. I don't really find that it makes much sense to line it up for a left to right 15 foot putt. I'll probably misread the putt anyway and even if I read it correctly, I'll line it up wrong. It does help a great deal for those close ones or even a straight 8 footer.
I know that somebody makes a gadget for drawing a perfectly straight line on a golf ball because I remember seeing it in a catalog. I can't remember if it was in Golfsmith or Edwin Watts, but I'm sure that the product is out there.
Personally, I've tried nearly every alignment technique on a golf ball ever suggested and found them all distracting. Now I look down on a perfectly white dimpled surface when I putt and have the alignment lines on a mallet-style putter to guide me.
I find this approach much more helpful and time saving than trying to line up the line on the ball and then line up the line on the putter to the line on the ball to the intended line of the putt.
and then after you line up the line on the ball to the line of the putt and then line up the line on the putter to the line of the ball to the line of the putter, who knows? you may have messed up the line of the putt in the first place?
They even have a fancy one that supposebly spins the ball and finds its best roll that way. I was informed by one of my members it doesn't work. I never tried it so I can't say for sure. It runs for about $24.
Check-Go -- Golf Ball Sweet Spot Finder
Ever make a beautiful 10-foot putt on a level green only to notice the ball curve away from the hole at the last second? If you thought there must be something wrong with your equipment-you were more correct than you knew. Believe it or not, a perfectly round golf ball has never been manufactured.
Just like automobile tires appear to be perfectly round-yet they still need to be spin balanced before being driven at high speeds. The same holds true for golf balls. The inherent lopsidedness of every ball works against you off the tee and on the green.
The Check-GO™ automatically realigns the balls heaviest areas along its equator, so that the ball no longer has a tendency to wobble, but rather roll more accurately on the green and drive further of the tee with fewer hooks and slices.
While spinning a golf ball at 10,000 revolutions per minute, the Check-Go automatically realigns the golf ball's heaviest areas along its equator, so that a less than perfectly balanced golf ball no longer has a tendency to wobble, but rather roll more accurately on the green. The Check-Go will not make an unbalanced golf ball perfectly balanced. What it will do is show you the optimal balance point of each and every ball you put in play. Check-Go Golf Ball Sweet Spot Finders feature:
* Easy to use game improvement tool
* Locates your golf balls sweet spot with scientific precision
* Reduces the chance of hooks and slices
* High speed gyroscopic action realigns the ball's variance in mass along the equator
* The ball no longer has a tendency to wobble
* Golf balls roll more accurately on the green and drive further off the tee

* On the tee or green, simply line up the ball's equator with your target and swing as usual

* Hit straighter shots
* Drive the ball longer

"I believe knowing where the sweet spot is and marking it has helped me add 20-25 yards to my shots. I use the equator line in my teaching...showing the student if the ball is stroked properly the line will remain straight, if not the line will wobble" -Walt P. Golf Pro
Sweet Spot Finder...Greater Accuracy, More Control & Longer Distance!
Thanks, golfblab, I knew that someone made a product like that. In fact, I saw a commercial on TGC Saturday for the item you posted. People will buy anything that promises straighter shots and greater distance, no matter how expensive or ridiculous.
I understand the rationale and have tried it, of course (will try anything). I've even gone so far as to look for the ball's seam and draw the line on that. But then as I'm over the ball, I get neurotic about whether I accurately lined up the ball's line with my intended line of play, LOL. So now I just put the ball down and try to relax.

ask the pros how much of a hassel and waste of time it is. Even if I line up the putt one inch off of my target that may be a lot closer then i would have putted it without lining it up.
I tried that Spin & Go and sent it right back. Could not get a crisp clear line, and it never seemde to spion to the same balance point when I would spin the ball a second time.
I do like to line up my puts with the lettering, I feel it helps me line my putter up to my attend line. The instructor in the ESPN 3 Club Tour showed us this method.
