Tempo

My biggest issue in golf is that I try and hit the ball too hard. Everytime I get a lesson, I get slowed down, and I strike the ball better, but it always creeps up again, and when I try to slow it down myself I lose my timing completely and stuff it up even more. It's just that I'm so used to swing hard that I struggle to do it any other way. But most of my regular faults are caused by or at least not helped by my overly aggresive slasher swing.

Any good tips on consistently finding the right amount of effort? I've tried counting, but my body always outraces my count. I'm suposed to count to 4, but I'm always finished swinging before I'm finished counting.

When I get too fast, I swing with a weighted club (or even just a donut weight that I keep in my bag). That not only helps me get the rhythm and tempo back, but also works to keep me on the proper plane.

If I am swinging way too hard, I like to use a tube sock with a rolled up pair of socks inside of it. If I swing too hard, I end up hitting myself. The key is to keep it from hitting your arms. If you swing to hard, it hits your back arm. If you swing to soft, it hits your front arm.

I bought the momentus (40 oz.) a few weeks ago. It's amazing how much it's improved my tempo.

I look like Ernie Els now!

The Momentus has helped me a lot with my tempo, but I still catch myself sometimes swinging a little on the fast side.

One thing that helped me that you might want to try is, when at the top of your backswing, try to feel like you are just dropping the club onto the ball. But dont forget to use your hips or you will end up hitting dirt further than the ball! Whenever i visualize this I always have great tempo. Give it a try next time you are at the range

Tour tempo: Looks Promising

My first lesson in tempo was the Medicus driver and my instructor who gave me the cadence "H-e-e-e-e-e-re's Johnny!" (ie moderately slow back and whip it through).

Now I am using the cadences outlined in the book above. Try it out. It helped me.

The 'awesome drill' described in the following link may help:

Back on track w/ an awesome drill

Also, have take lot of smooth swing practice without a ball.

The same method as VJC mentioned works well with a bath towel.Twirl it up,wet one end of it & ring it out. Then tie a knot in the damp end & swing with it.If your swing is working well the towel will move with very little flex in it.You'll know if you aint swinging well b/c you'll end up slapping yourself silly with a wet towel :D

i think lots of this have this problem,i find i hit the ball far with smooth swing, and guess what happens next, because i,m hitting it far i try to hit it harder to hit it further and my accuracy goes, grab a driver upside down holding the clubhead as grip with handle now becoming the head, hear that nice whoosh from the shaft as you swing it softly and smoothly and then turn club right way up and get that feel,i find that if i watch pros and try and absorb their tempo it helps, infact i want to get hold of a golf video and not neccesarily instructional but just lots of shots to watch and hopefully copy that lovely tempo.

Yep,good point there rick. You want ot use that drill (upside down club) & have the 'whoosh' of the club sounding off thru the impact area as opposed to us amatuers who make that 'whoosh' half way thru the downswing.I've used it alot & its a great little tip ! :)

On the same lines I try to swing fast and aggressively but I do it with my core and my hips. My take away I try to maintain the "Y" my arms and club make. From arms/hands standpoint I work on making the first six inches of my downswing (hands and club) move at the same speed as the last 6 inches they were moving when I got to the top. I was given this tip by a guy who is a scratch golfer and it helped tremendously.

Wish I'd bought that one instead of the weighted club from Wal-Mart. I still look like Craig Stadler.
