Quick setup question?

I was wondering why with my new irons that I have to line my club head a good bit inside the ball? I have it where bout half the ball is on grooves on the toe at setup but when I come through Im hitting dead center perfect? I was wondering what would cause this?

This could be a lie angle issue. Were you fitted for your clubs?

Yes they took measurements with lie board and wrist to floor and all. This was the setup that allowed me to scrape the tape off the center when I hit the lie board. Not a complete fitting but to make sure my lie was right for me.

Maybe it a slight adjustment of your grip is in order? I think that turning your righthand grip a little stronger (i.e. in such a way that you see your right hand finger nails a little better) might help (if you are a righthander). Try this at your own risk: I am not a golf pro (and I did not get to take a look at your situation!).

I will try and get video soon. Ive been unable to as I have nowhere to place the digital camera to get a good view and I have to rely on my mother as my father is WAY too shaky to get a good clear veiw.

The worst golf lesson in golf is to let your arms hang straight down under your shoulders at address. No one comes through impact in that position. Their hands are up and extended with the shaft lined up with the left tricept muscle and right fore arm. So if you set up with your arms hanging down then you have to set up with the ball on the toe as you have done or you have to raise up on the shot through impact to make up for this arm extension at impact. The easiest way is to set up like you are doing, or to extend at address into the impact position at address. That is what I do.

Your arms may be extending off your body at impact (the tail wagging the dog). So you now have a need to setup with the ball out on the toe. I have a friend who does this and he hits it a ton - George Knutson suggested this in his video "Swing Motion" - he says it allows for a natural extension of the arms. The only problem with my buddy is he has to hit 200 balls a day to groove it and now is starting to get soreness and injuries (elbows, wrists, shoulders, back).

Just an aside: Knutson was a prolific practicer too, as are most professionals, that is why I wouldn't put much stock in pro golfers instructional videos - you hit enough balls you can groove anything, all of sudden it's time put out a video and reveal the "secret" to the world. Hogan was one of the worst. Most people don't have the time, strength, or money to practice that much. IMHO, you are better off going with teaching pros videos: Jimmy Ballard, Jim Mclean, David Leadbetter, Butch Harmon, Rick Smith etc. to name a few. At least they teach a swing that can be easily copied, and works for the majority of people.

Back to your question. Try to feel some connection of your triceps to your pec muscles. After you connect your upper arms you can measure to the ball. The dog wags the tail now. During the swing you should feel like your elbows stay a little closer together - this will keep your upper left arm on the pec muscle on the backswing (a little slide of the upper left arm across the pec muscle won't hurt as long as you turn your shoulders too - and it is permissable to let the left elbow bend slightly at the top). Keep the upper left arm connected until the shaft is horizontal in the follow-through; as you rotate your belly button to face the target you rotate your left forearm, and the elbow points down. Now it can move away from the left side.

Drill: Do one-handed swings (without a ball) with your left hand only and you'll quickly see that you will get more power with the arm connected and the chest (pec muscle) pushing the upper arm through. Make sure you rotate your forearm to the left through impact or you won't be able to fold your left elbow in the finish (fix your slice and prevent a sore elbow at the same time!). Add some unwinding of the hips just before the club gets to the top of the backswing and really hear some noise come out of the club!

Hope this helps, Merry Christmas to those it doesn't offend, and happy holidays to everyone else,

Thank you very much Golfguru. I actually just started hitting balls like this(one of my mental changes during a poor round) and it worked perfectly so I stuck with it. I havent needed to hit 200 a day or anywhere near. For me I just need to swing the club at the very least a bucket or round a week. Also if you dont mind would you please explain the tail wagging the dog you were saying above? Also I dont feel I need to get more distance or fix a slice as I have already accomplished that but that is a good tip. Also thank you all for your advice on not to worry about my setup. Also I would like to wish each and everyone of you a Merry Christmas!!

Dog wagging tail: Connection of upper arms to pec muscles where arms and shoulders move back and through together . Power comes from winding and unwinding body. Right elbow points down in backswing and left elbow points down in throughswing. A home run swing.

Tail wagging dog: Arms sliding across body back and through independently of shoulders. Right elbow points out away from target on backswing and left elbow points out towards target on throughswing. Power comes from arms only. A bunt.
