I usually hit my irons pretty well off the fairway and from the rough. However, when I have to tee it up on a par 3, I usually make poor contact and hit the ball weakly to the right (I'm right-handed).
I always keep my hands forward and play the ball pretty far back in my stance with my irons to ensure good contact. But when I swing from the tee box w/ an iron a lot of times I will hit the ball about 50-60 yards slightly to the right.
I only tee the ball up just past the ground and I try to swing the same as if it were on the fairway but I tend to mishit a lot of tee shots on par 3's. And I don't think that I overswing either.
Does anyone have a similar problem or can someone give me some advice?
Don't tee it up very high at all..... are you taking a divot the same as in the fairway? chances are your not. I had the same problem for a while, and I traced it to having the ball teed up high enough to where I had to pick it off the tee instead of hitting down and through the ball like In the fairway.
Im the same as tachus, I'll tee a 3 or 4 iron to where the ball is almost still touching the ground. 5 iron on down I hit it off the deck. If I want to try to fade a 5 then I'll tee it a little bit. Sounds like maybe your body wants to lift the ball off the tee without you knowing it or feeling it. Remember to hit down and through.
i never use a tee with my irons. i dont think i ever have. I use my irons from the fairway everytime and i know my distances from the grass, so why change a variable for a once and a while shot? thats just how i see it. Although i have heard "never give up a chance to use a tee". As far as hitting them to the right only on par 3's when you are accurate from the fairway. Thats mental my friend. Dont even think about the fact you only have 3 shots to do this hole in. Think of it as a par 5 and you hit a monster drive. You now just have to get it on the green and 2 putt for birdie. The mental thought of it being a par 3 throws a lot of people off. i suffered from the same prob. I used to always try to attack the pin instead of just getting on the dance floor. It proved to be disastrous for me more often than not. Just get to middle of that big patch of grass. Dont even worry about the pin for a while. You will be on your way to dropping your par 3 average. good luck
As long as the tee box is good I will hit off the grass if for no other reason than to have one more chance to groove a fairway swing and contact during the round...I used to have the problem that you are having and solved it by re examining my preshot routine to include more focus on alignment, a few practice swings and intermediate targeting (blade of grass between the ball and the green to focus on for aiming)...this all helped but what really made the issue go away is about 1000-2000 range balls over a 3 week period hit off tees as I would on par 3s...nothing beats familiarity...
I hit from the teebox with no tee. I do use a tee if I have a short to medium distance shot where I have to land it dead the tee allows me to get the ball WAY up there and itll hit and stop or draw back a little even with a long iron for say a 150yrd shot due to my huge loss of distance from the teein it up too high.
I don't particularly like hitting off tees with irons either. But, since lots of tee boxes are mown so tightly, it's easy to catch it a little fat if you just throw the ball on the ground and hit it.
What I like to do is give the ground a little thump with the club to make a slight raised spot to set the ball on. This works pretty well for me. Then you just go ahead and take a nice divot just like hitting from the fairway.
If you do use a tee, do what viper says and shove the tee down almost flush with the ground. If you can see the tee underneath the ball, it's teed too high for an iron.
