how can i gain distance with my irons?

i am pretty pleased with my driver distance. i'd say on average, if i hit it solid, my drive will go 260-270 yards. the course i play is pretty windy and if i have the wind at my back, i'll hit it a good 300 yards (once, i hit a 330 yard drive, no joke!) and against the wind, i'll hit it at least 230 yards. it really varies between 230 - 300 depending on the wind so i'd say about 260-270 if conditions were still.

the problem is my irons. my distances with them are pretty pathetic. in still conditions, i'll hit my pitching wedge about 100 yards and a 6 iron 150 yards. from 125, i'll play an 8 iron. i would think my distance would be higher considering my driver distance. i use steel stiff shafts on my irons. i regularly drive as far as many long hitters but when it comes to irons, they seem to always use a shorter iron than me. what can i do to lengthen my iron shots?

There are a lot of variables here, but loft is a place to start. However, we're not just talking loft that you can measure with a loft gauge (if you had one), but actual loft as the clubhead contacts the ball. Is the clubhead leading the shaft when it gets to the ball, or is the shaft/grip leading your iron swing? A slight leading with the grip end of the club through the hitting zone will tend to (a) increase your wrist release just before impact and thus increase clubhead speed and (b) deloft the club a little. De-lofting creates a more direct "hit," which in turn creates a more efficient energy transfer from club to ball.

Regular flex shafts might be something to try if you really feel that you're not getting enough out of your irons, or just a another stiff shaft with different playing characteristics.

However, unless your game really suffers by not having a club to hit a specific distance, why worry? Who cares what anyone else is hitting on a particular hole? If you can stick it close with your 6 iron while everyone else is hitting their 7 or 8, why worry?

Yeah deflofting is how you will gain the distance, with your shorter irons it is quite a bit easier... another way to do it is just play the ball back in your stance.

I guess the real question is:
How accurate are your irons? How many Greens do you hit in regulation?

If you aren't hitting a lot (say 10-12+) then distance is not the problem, it's consistency and accuracy. If you are hitting a lot, then consider shaft changes, loft changes, etc.

trap the ball. play it back and drive down like there's no tomorrow. you'll get more backspin (straighter) and more velocity (distance) - look on tour, there arent many guys who arent trapping their irons.
