When this happens to me, it mostly due to being too quick on my backswing. Generally, a fast backswing can lead to a deceleration of the club during the downswing, which can cause you to hit behind the ball.

You could try putting the ball just a little further forward in your stance. If you have got into a habit of having the ball too far back then your swing will be steep with most of your weight on your back foot, this could be the cause of hitting the short sticks a bit fat. hope this helps.

If you swing fast with the rest of your clubs then that shouldn't be a problem.

Where do you position the ball?

I have the same problem. On short par 4's, I can hit an amazing tee shot. Leave myself with 100 yards or less and I'll shank the second shot. This especially happens if I have a shot where I can't take a full swing.
