Quality of a Golf Grip

In the recent video I posted of me with a 5-iron and all of my practice so far this year has been with old clubs with probable origonal grips. The grip on the 5-iron I use to practice, and all the other old clubs I practice with, is very old so it is actually not grippy at all. It is almost like plastic or hard rubber now. I was wondering if this is a big factor in learning how to swng.
I have a good/better set by my local course and dont use it by my house but the reason I was wondering is, I worked on the thing you guys mentioned in my swing, plane, clubhead position, but I still really struggle to even hit the ball more that 50 feet, literally. It's like I just cant square the clubhead on impact, and even when I hit a straight shot, it is very high with very little distance. I know its probable because I'm not releasing well, or at all. So I was wondering if you think I will have an easier time with my clubs with good grips.

The reason that I am interested, is I may not be able to use my good clubs before Thursday, and Thursday I'm going downstate to play my first round of the year (the courses arent even open yet anywhere within an hour of where I live, my local course still has some snoe on one hole.), and right now, woth my old clubs, I cant hit at all.
-thanks

Re: Quality of a Golf Grip

If your grips are really old and hard, you should diffinetly get them re-gripped ASAP. They will be really slippy forcing you to really grip the club tight to stop it flying out your hands, therefore causing alot of tension in your arms and therefore contributing to bad shots.

The wrong size grips can also cause too much tension aswell and effect release, so make sure you get the right sized grip for your hands.

Grips that bad will kill your swing. You have to squeeze much too hard just to hold onto the club, and even then it's going to tend to twist in your hands. There is just no way to control the clubhead with slippery grips.

I'm just now getting my irons and my putter regripped... dropped them off at the shop this morning so I can have them back for my Wednesday round. Next time I have a couple of days when I can't play, I'm going to get the rest of my clubs done... I'm switching to mid-size grips... my hands really are just barely too large for standard... and the mids felt right when I was trying them today. I've been really inconsistent even when I felt like I was swinging ok. So having my bag half standard and half mid-size might be interesting this Saturday for a Men's Club tournament. Fortunately it's a team format, so I'll get some help from my teammates...
