Hi, I'm a 18 handicapper, who, if not careful, is going to be sliding down the handicap ladder soon if I don't sort out my problem. At impact my hands are not ahead of the ball and my triangle has broken down to form a Z shape. Thankfully I still get the ball airbourne but I add much loft to the club and never take a divot. I know I should be hitting down on the ball and that my hands should be ahead of the ball....I just can't reciprocate it on my full swing. Two PGA intructors haven't been able to sort out my problem.....has anyone else had this problem and sorted it out?
Thank you.
I'm afraid I can't help you any more than a PGA professional could in person. All I have to say is, maybe you can start by practicing on half swings. Then on 3/4 swings. Then on the full swing. That is, if you haven't tried it already.
I have a very similar problem as you, i was scooping the ball and was seriously suffering with the distance i was acheiving, i was only hitting my 9 iron 100 yards at the range and on the course i achieved maybe 10-15 yards more. I then started carrying out a few drils suggested to me. I tried several drills that all helped, i placed a headcover a foot behind the ball and i had to avoid hitting it so it made me swing abit steep on the ball. This drill really helped me. Another drill i did was just hit punch shots. Also another drill i saw tom lehman do was to just hit the ground with the club head, this would then give a feeling for hitting the ball with the left hand. These drills combined has helped me add on another 30+ yards with my 9 iron down the range, i'm yet to take the new swing on the course but i expect to be hitting even further.
The dreaded chicken wing creeps into my swing too. I typically handle it by making sure I'm extending well on my takeaway, a full shoulder turn (I've noticed that I tend to chicken wing as a result of not getting my back fully turned towards the target), and then coming right back down towards the ball, keeping that same extension of my arms as on takeaway.
I've all noticed that standing too erect over the ball will cause me to chicken wing as I'm not getting my hips out of the way at impact.
On your backswing and foreswing practice pressing your elbows together. This will make you coordinate the arms. Also on the release rotate the forearms not the wrists.
There is an elastic band marketed as a swing trainer that is wrapped around the elbows that does the same thing.
Don't take this wrong or personal, but if two instructors that have seen you cannot help you out, then it is not likely we can either.
Here is what I can tell you. If the club is passing your hands at the impact zone is a dead give away you are de-accelerating through impact. It is impossible for the club head to pass your hands if they are accelerating at impact. I would be willing to bet you are swinging from the top, and have shot you wad before you get to the ball in the impact zone.
So my 2-cents worth is make sure your ball is an inch or two behind the bottom of your swing arc, and accelerate through the impact zone.

Thanks for the tip. I should have pointed out that I never knew this was the problem until I filmed my swing and slowed it down. To the naked eye, I guess it looked like a fine swing. It would seem i'm not accelerating through the impact area. Thanks again

I'll work on this down the range and see how I get on. Makes sense to me.....but then again most of my problems with golf do!
Thanks for your help.
