Re: Is it okay to have a very slow backswing?

I combined my slow backswing with nikeone's thread's "chin up move", which made me rotate my left shoulder all the way to point to the ball, I found out that it made my slow backswing go a little faster and smoothened out my tempo...now I just go slow the first foot and a half of my backswing and until just before my shoulders go under the chin and it just takes over my swing automatically...better results and more consistent contacts.

Re: Is it okay to have a very slow backswing?

Nearly ALL Tour players swing at a 3-1 ratio, start of backswing to the top = 3, downswing to impact = 1. That is actually a pretty quick backswing. Some players are faster than others but nearly all exhibit this 3-1 ratio or something very close to it.

The Director of Instruction at our club said if he could recommend one book to anyone it would be Tour Tempo.

Re: Is it okay to have a very slow backswing?

Jim, I'll check that book out...

the 3-1 ratio means counting 1-2-3 then 1 right?

I know my problem now, I think this is why I tried the very slow back swing....I have trouble "feeling" the top of my swing that's why even before I reach the top, I already "jerk" it back down...do you guys know a drill or something that can let me know the right time to start the downswing?

The time it takes from takeaway to top of the swing is supposed to take three times longer than the time it takes from top of the swing to impact. If it takes equal amounts to say (or play in your head) 1,2,3, and you move while you are saying these numbers, then you are correct. However, if you use the 1 to start your takeaway, then you should reach the top of the backswing / start the downswing ('transition') at 4, and reach impact at 5.

I hope the following table with the two counting methods will help you, won't confuse you!

1. Start of takeaway.
.................................................. 1
2.
.................................................. 2
3.
.................................................. 3
4. Transition.
.................................................. 4
5. Club impacts the ball.

Re: Is it okay to have a very slow backswing?

thanks got it. I've been doing this before but I did not get the logic of it because I could not equate a long "strong" shot with I slow paced swing but now I think I know what it is all about....Its all about the tempo
