getting hands over?

Yes, another "help me" thread from me =]

Ok here's the skinny. Irons are going A LOT better. Still got a coulpe kinks to work out but progressing.

Now its my driver. Posture is good, balance, no more coming from the outside...but the wife says I need to get my hands over because when I come down the club face is open sending the ball into a slice. She says I don't need to much at all, just a tiny bit to close the club face enough on impact that its not sending it right. I've been trying to think to myself how I would go about ways of getting my hands over but came up nothing.

Any tips on ways/how to get my hands over?
Thanks!

Re: getting hands over?

I had the same issue for the longest time as well. After talkin to an instructor...here are some tips he gave me..
-on your backswing, try and keep your spine in the same angle while rotating your shoulders. keep the clubface slightly closed when at about waist high during your backswing.
-at the apex of your swing, start to transfer your weight to your front leg, while turning your hips. Your shoulder will follow as a result, and be sure to keep your front arm and club in a 90* angle during your downswing.
-Just before you make impact with the ball, your shoulder should begin to follow your hips and turn, resulting in your arms and wrist turning towards the ball to strike.
-Give it a good follow through and watch it fly.

hope this helps. i still need to get my mental game goin before i really cut some strokes off of my handicap, but as long as you can visualize it, it will help you out a lot.

Well, I have the same problem but i dont think it's getting the hands over(because i dont know what you mean) but what causes my slice is my wrist are not closing on the follow through they send the club facing to where the ball went instead of parallel to my body making it go straight.

Don't overlook the impact that the grip can have. You may just need a stronger grip and don't grip the club too tight.

Re: getting hands over?

Lol I know what you mean i also had to experiment. It turns out I have the opposite problem of you my hands really come thru. So I had to go back to a weak grip to get the clubface square at impact. If the clubface is open or closed at impact the ball can only travel in that direction. Lol kind of novel isn't it. I guess for me it was all the baseball and softball I played. You have to really open the hips and fire the wrists to pull the ball with power. I have actually found thru experimenting at the range that with the driver I actually have to let the hands lag a little. It takes timimg but I will get it down now that a have a solid base to work from.

Re: getting hands over?

Thinking about it, I think I probably do grip to hard. Deff will loosen it up today at the range and see what happens.

As of right now, on the course I just line up wayyyyyyy left and just grip it and rip it and let the *** fly that way even with the slice, it still travels a modest distance

Remember that if you have been gripping too tight and loosen up it will be really funny but don't give up on it after a few swings the ball will really start flying.

If my wife told me I need to get my hands over I think I'd put the clubs back in the garage

Re: getting hands over?

I find that if I need to correct something 'before' impact then I look at my post-impact position and change that (i.e. work out where I need to be at finish). My body then tends to make the adjustment pre-impact to arrive at the new post-impact position.

For opened club face that means doing the 'Brian Manzella' wedding ring up pose at the end of the swing.

Grip pressure from 1-10 with 10 being the strongest, have it at a 2 :)

Make sure you aren't ROLLING your forearms open at the takeaway.

Try to take the WHOLE club away from the ball including the grip.

Re: getting hands over?

Try the Momentus training aid, it's good for your take away and your swing.

here's a silly question, is this pertaining to both hands or merely your right? i don't have a problem lightening the right hand, but the left continues to want to strangle the club.
