Recently I've been working on my backswing. My high school coach has told me that I drag the club inside on the takeaway. I'm now focusing on taking the club back and keeping the head outside or even with my shoes. I'm also trying to cock my wrists more upward rather than to the inside as I was before. At first this all seemed to work great, however, lately my ball flight has been left to left, or a pull hook. Any ideas? Should I maybe try to go back to a more rounded swing?
A more rounded swing will just increase your woes since if you are a righty it makes the ball move from right to left ^^
You are probably getting a little to "handsy" releasing through the impact zone before you should. It should be a natural turn over of the wrists after you come in contact with the ball and follow through. Couldn't tell you without a picture of your swing though lol.
In either case good luck, try a little more upright worst come to worst.
I had a mean pull hook going too, and tried about everything. It turned into "paralysis by analysis". My golfing partner finally gave me a tip that has helped a ton. Now when I start down, I am turning my hips hard to the left (not shifting). It has taken some work to get it just right (still messing up sometimes) but more often than not I am hitting straighter and lower tragectory shots. And longer...
Try it if you like, but it seems to bring me down on plane better, and not so much out to in.
What you are talking about is how you are supposed to start your downswing. Most pros will start their downswing by turning their hips first to maintain as much of that coil that they built up as possible to release into the ball. Its helps add distance too ^^
I'd say the hands are outracing the hips for sure causing the face to be closed at impact and with a down the line swing plane the ball will start left and hook. I get a few now and then but generally hold of the release a little if I feel my hips are slowing down which gives me a pull straight and to the left but not as bad as the hook.
