I've been having problems with my swing here lately. About a month ago i was drawing the ball with my driver my woods and all my irons. I couldn't control it with my irons so i decided to make a change and fade the ball with my irons. Ever since i tried that i find myself blocking it out right and kind of holding on right at impact. Now all i want to do is hit the ball straight because i cant even hit the green anymore. I'm struggling to get par every time because I'm forcing myself to get up and down on every hole.
one way to keep from "blocking it out", a trick i've learned, is at impact, and the motions after, try to make your right shoulder(if your right handed, left shoulder is your left handed) feel as if its turning towards the target and past the target..
I wonder if your in a different position at impact that requires you to hang on? It seems like the root cause of a problem is always a few steps back. We get in a bad position for whatever reason and that then requires us to do something else to make contact with the ball. Your swing may have gotten a little steeper while trying to hit a fade? If so, you might be holding on a little longer to keep from hitting the ground fat.
When I am either drawing it and missing left, or blocking it, its because I am laying it off at the top and coming too much from the inside. Laying it off is when your club points left of the target (for a righty) at the top of your swing. Throw your swing on video and check it out. Also check half way down, see if your club is inside the swing plane.
This is difficult to fix and takes some time. I suggest taking practice swings like the following: Start with the club pointing at the target, as if you were a quarter way through your forsing, just after impact. Then swing the club back, nice and relaxed, and let the club swing up half way back on your backswing on its natural swing plane, then swing back through and follow the same plane that the club went back on, and swing to your finish. The swing plane is the most important objective to achieve in golf. Its very difficult to play consistent without being on plane
I'll bet in the beginning all you had to do was to adjust the grip a little. But it is too late now that your swing plane is messed up. Golf is a stupid game just when you almost think you got it figured out it moves on you.
What did you do to attempt to stop drawing the ball?
Just guessing, it sounds like you started try to slowdown your release at impact so that the clubface would stay square longer through impact. I've heard people give this "advise" before. All of a sudden your release is ed up and things are going downhill quick! Trying to do something consciously during the swing is a BAD IDEA. Get your hands on a video camera and take some shots of your swing down-line. This will tell you if you are slotting the club correctly and if your swingplane is still okay. It's possible that all you have to do is start letting your hands release normally and stop trying to "DO" something at impact. Just let it happen and see where the ball goes. Odds are your old swing is still there and once you can get it back, then you can make a slight grip change and start hitting greens again.
