fitting my kid

I just bought a set of irons for me, and I want to fix my 12 year old up with my old irons. Should I
re shaft the old clubs with lighter more flexible shafts,or just cut and regrip them?

Re: fitting my kid

You cannot just cut and regrip them, because you would increase the stiffness of the shaft. Since the shaft would be very fat and very short. You would be better off either getting a lighter set for juniors, or re-shafting them with the help of a professional.

Re: fitting my kid

I bought my son a series of lessons from a pro. But he does not do club repair. He sends it out to be done. He said he would mark the lengths for me if I wanted to do it myself.

I am leaning toward putting ladies shafts in the clubs instead of juniors, so they might still work for him next year.

you should actually lean towards senior shafts, since they tend to go into the low regular shaft ratings if you want them to kind of last. Though at that age he will grow to tall for you to need to worry about trying to make the shafts last. I grew out of my senior year HS clubs by almost 2 inches, which is quite a bit.

He is 12 years old. Probably 5' tall. He is just beginning lessons with local pro. I would guess that he could hit a 5 about 150 if he connected.

I hadn't thought about senior shafts. A friend had suggested ladies shafts, and or clubs too.
I don't know how that would fly with a 12 year old boy. I allready told him that I would fix up my irons for him. Now I wonder if the heads are going to be too heavy.

So many choices. I need to get rolling on this soon. He might grow out of them before I ever get them built.
