Played 18 on Friday, kept hitting my iron shots thin of the tee.
Not until I finished round did I realise that I may have been teeing my ball up too low.
What an idiot I am. 4 par 3's and I hit three tee-shots over the green because of this. Just didn't think to tee up higher.
Not sure that's tee height is your problem. I tee everything except driver about 1/4", and that seems to work really well for me. I know people who tee their irons higher than that, but I also see them hit alot of fat shots doing so.
I can't remember the exact quote, but it was Arnold Palmer who said something to the effect of, "I'm going to put a tee under the ball every chance I get." That included par 3's. His thinking, and the thinking of most better golfers is that if you can have a perfect lie, why not take advantage of it?
I used to like to hit everything off the ground. I guess for spin. Now I have learned,at least with my swing, that ball position at address can determine if I hit ball high, low, rigt, left.

Problem with that thinking is backspin on short par 3's with the mid and short irons. In Arnies days backspin was not much of a factor as it is today with modern equipment.
Now with that said high handicappers should use a tee on par 3's because they do not have the skills to impart backspin, nor should they invest in the balls that can generate backspin.
You will still get spin on ball when it is teed up.
Correct. You can also get more spin pinching the ball off the ground, but I'd rather have the perfect lie, and only a few feet of spin than try to crank one back off the green.
I don't know why anyone wouldn't use a tee on a par 3. I feel much more comfortable with one for some reason, even though I tee it up basically ground level

Right - I saw him on the Golf channel say that. I tee irons/hybrids barely off the ground - as said above just to get a good lie. 3/5 wood about a quarter inch.

You poll 100 pros, and I'd be surprised if you can 5 who wouldn't tee the ball up on a par 3. Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, Harvey Penick... all say that you are making a mistake if you don't take advantage of the opportunity to give yourself a perfect lie when you get the chance. Even just teeing to grass height is always going to give you a better lie than putting the ball down on the grass. Gives just that tiny bit of additional margin of error from the chance of chunking the ball.
