im going out for the team this summer and was just wondering what you guys think i good score to shoot would be to make varsity, i have no clue, but i feel pretty comfortable cause i shoot around 85 for 18 holes
Also, do you no if we get sent out in 2 or 4somes.
This issue has been covered quite a bit in the past and the consensus seems to be that it depends on where you're from. This seems to have a high correlation between how good the golf teams are.
85 seems pretty solid. I would think you could at least make JV but Varsity could be a stretch. Again, it depends on your competition. I would seek out the golf coach at your high school and have a chat with him. He would be able to give you a lot better advice than I.
High school golf is played in 9 hole fashion, stroke/medal and match dependent upon region. Average score (for my high school) is about a 40. Competition could be stiffer in bigger school, ask the coach at a particular high school what the average score for varisty is. If it is to stiff try another school, or practice harder ^^.
I played high school golf for a while, its 2 from each team, so a foursome. in stroke i believe it was the top 4 or 5 scores, and you usually had 1-2 alternates incase one of your starters can't play. There could be a million people shooting for those spots but you usually won't find a JV squad in golf, atleast in delaware.
It all totally depends on where you live and what your school is like. If you are from a large school and large city I'm not sure an 85 would make varsity. I go to a school that is small, and I live in a rural area. We don't have tryouts or anything, I'm the #1 golfer on the team and I typically shoot 41 and under on 9 holes. And high school golf is not always played in 9 hole fashion, sometimes bigger schools play 18 hole meets. In Minnesota, you get 6 guys on a team. Top 4 scores count, so nobody is an "alternate."
To go against what shortgamesmortgame said, every school that I know of has a JV squad. I don't know why Delaware wouldn't have them but most do.
All I can say is, an 85 should give you a good chance, so just go for broke and get on that team!
Idk. Our HS is only D-3 and some of our 7th graders have shot 81's and 82's. That being said here it would probably take around mid to high 70s to start on varsity(just an estimate). As said before it really depends how big your town/highschool is.
Well around the Scottsdale, AZ area, 40 average and over doesn't get you anywhere on the team. It's all Varsity around here, too. But that's because we have year-round golf no matter what. A place like Delaware, I'd assume a 43 average would be pretty solid.
thanks for the help, but i just checked the slope of the course, its two strokes easier than the course i usually play for 9 holes, so thats 4 strokes.
Also, i live in a small town in SouthEastern Pennsylvania, and only like 14 people are trying out, so im pretty positive i can make varsity.
Usually with small schools, and most schools on the east coast there will not be a JV team due to lack of interest/competition (atleast in the HS arena). Just because there are 14 people trying out doesn't mean they are bad lol. At my school we had 12 people my freshman year, the top 4 shot in the mid-high 30's the bottom 5/6 shot high 30's low 40's. I shot in the low 50's freshman year (my 2nd year playing) than sophmore year on I shot high 30's low 40's
I said 40 average as in everyone that played if you took all their scores and averaged them it would be a 40 =O
no reason to look down on delaware.
Also it is 6 players, and you bring 1 alternate if there are any issues that arise.
I averaged between 76 and 78 and I made #1 varsity spot. Now days though and depending on the town you could be looking at 74 just to make team or 90 and breeze through. Just all depends on your competition.
Everyone talks about these mid to low 70s scores. I play all the time and rarely see many adults (that play all the time) shoot sores like that. Golf seems to be a game of egos!
Maybe there are some of the #1 slot High Schoolers out there that shoot low 70s, but that is why they are the #1 slot. There is plenty of room for the rest.

Scottsdale area schools all have low-mid 70's shooters. 77 average won't get you on the team.
It all depends upon where u live and the school. In my county, at some schools you have to shoot in the thirtys to be on the team but others, you just have to try out. Usually it is 6 players per team with the best 4 scores being added together to create your team score. I have played h.s. golf at the varsity level since freshman year when i started at about what you shoot or a little lower. I think that you have a good chance to make the team. Also, I can't think of a school that has a JV team.
Close. But I don't live in Scottsdale. Our team just plays many, many schools from there. My school, you pretty much just have to break 85-ish consistently. I'm a lot closer to Phoenix. One reason they (Scottsdale kids) are all so good is because they grew up financially well off and played country clubs, had lessons froma very early age, etc. Scottsdale has HIGH quality golf. Actually, the #1 junior boy (Philip Francis) and #1 junior girl (Ester Choe) in the country live and play in Scottsdale.
