Well, every situation has it's own unique challenge and there
are limits to what you can accomplish in certain situations so we have to speak in generalities...you were right to
grip up on the club but that's rarely enough to execute a decent recovery. Most times you also have to stand much more upright and swing much flatter expecting the ball to come off way left of where you're aiming. And then there's the lie...you were in light rough so contact might not have been so much of a consideration but in deeper rough you must deliver the clubhead much steeper and with more force. The
best advice, imo, is to create different trouble situations and practice them like Phil did at Oakmont, only don't overdo it and hurt yourself...you'll instinctively learn how to make all the body and swing adjustments to get out of the situation. One other thing...don't try to get too much out of it, don't try to pull off some miraculous recovery unless you've practiced the very situation you're in and stand a decent chance of accomplishing it...sometimes we just have to suffer the consequences of being there in the first place and take our medicine.
