i had this problem for a round, and your right in not spelling out the word, it is like a curse :).

Anyways, stand a little further from the ball, go to the range and hit some 3/4 wedge shots, once you feel comfortable take out an 8 iron, and smoke a few.... then ofcourse step up to your longer irons.

Worked for me, took about 20 mins to fix

maveric,
I battled the sh__ks for about 10 years. It was an on/off thing as you describe. Sometimes it got so bad I felt like walking off the course. And I was, at the time, playing to a handicap of between 6 and 7.

I took one lesson with an old local pro. He told me to forget about leading with my left side. He told me to make my swing more upright, and make sure I got through the ball with my right hand. He also told me to "think I was pausing at the top" before starting my downswing.

Worked for me. Every once in a while one will sneak into a wedge I hit, but I can usually get rid of it by concentrating on the above.

There are probably as many cures for the sh__ks, as there are causes. Hope you find one that works for you.

Good luck. No one deserves the sh__ks!

If it were happening to you alot I would suggest a video lesson with a good pro. If it is only happening once or twice in a round you might think about how hard you are swinging the club. One of the most common causes of a s__nk is trying to kill the ball. Watch the young bucks at the driving range, the ones that rent a club, it is swing for the moon, after a few s__nk's or hossel shots the shaft breaks or the head comes flying off. Wish I was still as strong as those young guys. :)

Best tip (from Harvey Penick's Little Red Book)

At the first sign of the s's, try to hit the ball toward the toe. You will get you feel/groove back. Usually I get the s's when I get too close/inside the ball.
