Help with Irons

Well, I'm having some problems. Not too unexpected, as I'm new to this game, but frustrating. Why are all of my iron shots going to my left? I even closed my front shoulder off to my target and I'm STILL hitting it left of where I want to. I'm not really good with irons anyway, so I'm trying to practice a lot with them and then get some putting in (I 3-putt every hole), but this was very frustrating, especially since I don't hit them very far anyway. Any help would be appreciated. I have a friend who is a pretty good golfer ( about a 5 handicap ) and he usually helps me, but he's out of town for a little bit.

Re: Help with Irons

Could be your grip (too stong) and you are closing the clubface before contact.
You could have the face closed before you start your swing.
You could be too close to the ball.
Or even swinging over the top making the right hand dominant.

Re: Help with Irons

I had this problem, mainly due to standing to close to the ball and it resulted in a very cramped and over the top type swing, hitting the ball with a closed club face. So, it went to the left.

Best thing would be to try get your vid on swing, it worked wonders for me.

you also want to make sure that your wrists aren't breaking too early forcing your club to beat your hands to the ball. if its not that then the people above me laid it out pretty well.

Re: Help with Irons

First thing i would do is check your grip, i wont go into explanation here but get a real good book showing the proper grip. Once you have that, and dont forget to practice it, i know of pro golfers that have clubs around the house to practice their grip for a few seconds on the way back from the bathroom. Now you need to work on the other fundementals like ball position, posture, weight distrubution etc.... you can do this almost anywhere.
At the range gain some confidence by hitting some really easy half swing 7 irons with your new pro like set up. Stick at it, remember some people here have been playing over 20 years and still go back to base when things get a bit wild. Nearly forget, when hitting those smooth half swing 7 irons make sure your grip pressure is no more than 3 on a scale of 1 to 10.
All this might feel strange to start, especially a proper grip but with practice you will get it.
Hope this helps,,,,
