Keeping Club Face Square

Ok.. heres a question for yall. As I start my backswing I am keeping my club face square..Meaning, im not rolling my hands or anything. I try to keep it square throughout the entire back swing and throughout the downswing...I have been having some great results by doing this.. The problem is at the top of the backswing the club face is closed..in other words the club face is almost facing the sky. Its not like its suppose to be..Which is square to my left forearm.. The general rule is a closed club face at the top of the backswing is suppose to cause a big nasty hook. But thats not the case with me. Im hitting the ball long with a draw...I have also noticed that im hitting everything in the center of the face.. So whats the deal??? When I try to keep the club face square to my left forearm during the backswing im hitting a fade and sometimes a slice. The only reason I think Im slicing is an open club face at impact..and sometimes my shoulders are open. let men know what yall think..

Re: Keeping Club Face Square

IMO the club needs to A) rotate or B) swing it more perpendicular to the ground, If u want to keep the club square at impact.....

Re: Keeping Club Face Square

What you are doing is bending your left wrist instead of hinging it properly. I use to do the same thing, but it is not good. It promotes an over the top move and robs you of power. When using the other method you are just not releasing your hands properly. Again same problem I have always had. Your body is not clearing out and your hands coming in open. I still use the square all the way back method some with my driver as that is of course the hardest club to square, but it had only hurt my game until I switched from it.

Re: Keeping Club Face Square

It is possible to keep the clubface square to the swing-plane for the entire swing. At half-way back the angle the clubface makes will be the same as your spine angle, and at the top it will be closed as described. There are some one-plane teachers who teach keeping the clubface square to the plane for the whole swing.

However, unless you are using a very strong grip, and I mean very strong like thumb at 3 or 4 o'clock, like Bill said, you will bend your wrist, not cock it. In almost every single shot, bending the wrist back and forth leads to very inconsistent shots.

Paul Azinger plays with a very strong grip, and Stan Utley advocates in his short game book keeping the club face square to the swing plane for pitches & chips. If you really feel like this is how you want to play, seek out some of the one-plane swing instructors and instruction who teach this method. Not all the one-plane swing coaches necessitate the square-to-plane positions, though, and you can definitely roll the forearms and still be a one-planer.
