Stance question

Hey everyone...I am still new to this game, and I am hooked and completely loving it. I have a quick question. Is there any rule of thumb when positioning your stance to the ball. How far away or close should you stand to the ball. Since I am a beginner I am looking for advice anyway I can. I know, you may be thinking "take lessons," and I will be soon but in the meantime I would like to take in as much advice as I can. Thanks again!!!

Re: Stance question

glad to see your enjoying playing and learning the game.

as for the question, whatever you feel comfortable with is your best bet, go on the range and see what gives you the results.

but here is a thing that i have seen on the issue in a golf channel regarding this - stand with the club gripped and hold it straight forward shoulder high and then ground the club, this will make sure ur not standing too close.

Tell me how you get on

Re: Stance question

here's a little trick to give you a starting point of about how far to stand from the ball.

1. Take your normal stance with any club (driver, wood, iron, wedge).
2. Close your eyes, stand back up erect, and raise your outstretched club to shoulder height. Next, lower your arms to your chest -- triceps on pecs.
3. With your eyes still shut, bend over at the waist as if to address the ball until your club hits the ground.

Now, open your eyes. If the clubhead is out past the ball, you've probably been standing a little too close. If it is inside, you may have been too far.

Like said, this is a starting point. The final step is to practice hitting balls and see what is comfortable, as was said above. You can stray a little from the point you got with your eyes closed, though too much and your swing probably has a flaw that needs correcting. Personally, I like having the ball way out there -- I bend over a fair amount and like to have the arms stretched way out. But, there are a lot of people who like to have the ball close, too. Each person and therefore each swing is different.
