ball position for irons

I'm a lefty and I usually set up my shots with the ball on the insinde of my right heel. Is there a general rule or guideline for you setup when it pertains to irons play ?

For your higher irons or your hyrbrids to you play the ball more in the middle or back of the stance ?

I'm really just looking for guideline that will help me since most of my shots even with say a 5 or 6 iron are usually high and short.

Thanks

Re: ball position for irons

Wedges and short irons can be played in the middle of your stance, Mid irons a few inches forward, and long irons another few inches forward. This is a standard recommendation these days. But you will still find a few instructors that teach all shots are played just inside the heel of the forward foot. Jack Nicklaus did this for years and it seemed to work well for him.

Irons off your right ear. Driver off tee goes off of your right shoulder.

That is all.

Re: ball position for irons

Went to a Canadian Tour event a few weeks ago and followed a whole bunch of terrific players. I had a very good view as the crowd was light, so I was on the tee box or just next to it. I made sure that my angle of sight was 90 degrees to their line when I was checking ball position. Noticed 2 things that they were doing that we usually do not read about in instruction books or golf magazines.

1) ball position for irons and hybrids was never further forward than halfway in their stance. They were hitting down on everything. Many played their wedges at or just ahead of their back foot.

2) tee heights were never as much as half a ball above the top of the driver. No one teed up higher than approx 1 inch. The top of the ball was even, or the tiniest fraction above the head.

I am doing both things now and hitting much more consistently. Getting a more driving trajectory with every club and hitting fat much less often.

Re: ball position for irons

short irons (9,8) & wedges - back of stance
mid irons (7,6,5) - middle of stance to slightly ahead of middle
long irons (4,3,2) - ahead of middle to forward (almost off of right heel)

that is what i learned are the general positions but it varies because of shaft flex & your personal strength and swing speed

Re: ball position for irons

It really depends on what you want to do with the shot. If you just want a lock-stock iron shot, I'd play everything but 5 iron and higher in the dead middle of your stance. The longer irons can be moved up a bit but not more than 2 inches for a normal shot.

If you want to punch the ball, position it back further and level out your shoulders. You'll probably take a mean divot but hold your finish low and you'll hit it low.

If you want to hit it straight up in the air, move the ball to where you'd play your 3-wood, maybe off your right heel. Make a swing with a high finish and pick the ball.
