i went through that a long time ago. when you chip using a bump & run, you should always allow some room for the ball to release because it will. make sure you strike down on the ball (not knifing it) and make sure you have a short follow thru. using a gap, sand, or lob wedge will check more than a 9 or an 8 iron obviously because of the loft. if you are using a wedge you will probably have to fly the ball a little more than halfway between you and the flag (that is what i do). if you are using and iron, try taking the same chipping motion, but think about hitting the ball like a putt. in other words, pretend you are putting. apply how hard you think you would strike the ball and how long or short the stroke would be if you were putting and just use the same feel for the chip (but use your chipping motion for the actual chip)

I HOPE THIS HELPS!

if you have problems or anymore questions, check back and tell me

And I thought you were an instructor withoyur own video series (which I really appreciate BTW, esp. the walkthrough drill)...let the kid be helpful; step in if you see some advice you disagree with...but "testing" is bad form...

Re: Do you need help?

I'm not actually testing.

I have some struggles with assisting folks on this particular subject. I am always looking at other instructors methods.

thanks for the instructors comment!

well, my dad (PGA professional ~ John Mullen) showed me this drill. i don't know if it will work because he hasn't really tried it on his students.

take a club and place it next to the pinkie toe of your back foot. have the club on the desired line to the target, but pointing backwards. start your backswing and stop at the first position (assuming you know what it is). your club should be parallel to the club on the ground at this position. then, just take it straight back until you reach the top of your swing. start the downswing as you normally do (hips leading, obviously) as you come down, make sure your club is directly over and parallel to the club on the ground; your hips are obviously clearing. then, start releasing the club and follow through.

i hope this helps, i haven't looked into this too much so i am not sure what drills to use, but this one appears to be the best in my opinion.

well, the mid to long irons, along with woods/metals, often exaggerate the mistakes that the short irons and wedges tend to hide, revealing the flaws in your golf swing...and unfortunately, they do it VERY clearly!

this could be caused by many reasons:

1) THE GRIP ~ you may have a grip that is TOO strong . try using a more neutral grip, you can probably find pictures of the proper "neutral" grip on google or in books.

2) THE CLUB FACE ~ we were all taught that the clubface should be square at address. this idea may sound correct, but it's WRONG. Jack Nicklaus, the greatest golfer ever (until tiger finishes his career "wink wink") said that the club face should look slightly open at address (facing slightly towards the right). this makes so much sense to me, along with many others. because your clubface sits about 1/4 inches, or more, behind the ball at address, it SHOULD look open. if it is squared, that 1/4 inch of space is plenty of room to allow that club to turn over because the club will return with a squared face 1/4 inches BEHIND the ball; it will start to shut as it closes that 1/4 inch gap. try opening the face SLIGHTY. DO NOT over exaggerate this.

3) ARMSY SWING ~ you may not be using enough shoulder turn. keep your left arm straight the whole backswing (starting from address) and through impact. turn using your SHOULDERS instead of your arms. WHEN YOU GET TO THE TOP OF YOUR BACKSWING, YOUR LEFT OR RIGHT(left if you play right-handed, right if you play left-handed)SHOULDER SHOULD BE TUCKED UNDER YOUR CHIN. start the down swing with your lower body, leading with the hips, and let your shoulders follow. keep your left arm extended through impact. as you are releasing the club through impact, both of your arms should be extended, allowing you to get better distances more consistently. keep your left arm straight as long as you can (not overdoing it). your right arm should be straight until you reach the top of the swing (the finish), then you can relax. try doing this in a mirror to help you see what you are doing.

4) OVER THE TOP ~ if this is the case, let me congratulate you on being able to release the club. if you are doing this, try coming at the ball from the inside. when you are setup at address and looking down at it, pretend the ball is a clock. the top of the ball ("^" side of the ball) is 12 o'clock, the left side ("<" side of the ball) is 9 o'clock, and the right side (">" side of the ball, the side your club makes contact with) is 3 o'clock. try to strike the ball at approx 4 o'clock, striking out at the ball from 4 o'clock to 10 o'clock, hitting it on the inside. since i assume you can release the club, striking the ball in this fashion should produce a nice draw; or for me when i did this, a very straight, and fairly high, ball flight.

that is really all i can think of, i haven't dealt much with duck-hooks, i know more about slices.

i truly hope this helps you, it has made me learn more about how to cure hooks for people in the future. if you need anything else, just come back!

GOOD LUCK WITH IT...and give me some feedback please!

Re: Do you need help?

Hey Seansy, I am having a lot of trouble with my Driver and rest of the woods. I hit my irons 90% accurate and straight. But whenever I hit with woods, they hook to the left or right. And sometimes, the ball goes straight, but only about 100 yards. Please help!

i struggled with this problem with my driver when the high school season was still going on (which is why i didn't touch my driver).

my guess is that you may be swinging too hard. i assume that you can hit your long irons with a nice ball flight and very crisp. even though it would make sense that someone can hit a 2 iron and a 5 wood the same distances does not always mean they are the "same" club. when someone looks down on, let's say a 5 iron, they would feel as though they should swing harder to get it up, which is understandable along with the rest of the long irons; but when someone looks down at a driver their perception of swing speed can dramatically change. looking down at a club shaped like that may convince you that you need to swing almost as hard as you can to get that 300+ yard drive, which is not the case.

take your normal swing and apply it with the driver/3 wood. the swing will obviously look a little different, but the speed, technique, and plane of the swing should stay the same.

if you want some reassurance, TIGER WOODS has stated numerous times that he only swings about 80%. don't swing to your limit, keep it in control, release the club, extend through and out at the ball, and you should be able to maintain your balance alot better. if you can work on doing this, your drives should feel much better, look much better, and they should be more accurate.

I hope this helps you!

if it doesn't, come back and tell me what happened to your ball flight and anything else you think i should know.

Re: Do you need help?

Have a 10 yard approach shot to an elevated green that runs down hill away from me. Flag is about 4 yards in from the fringe in front of me. My ball rests on hard packed short grass. What club and how should I play it? Have full set of wedges, PW, GW, Sw and LW. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Re: Do you need help?

I fade the ball in my long irons and my woods. Well, it either fades alot or it pulls straight to the left. Any help would be appreciated. There are videos of my swing in a few threads down, called "Newbie asks for help" or something along those lines. Thanks!
