A little about YOUR golf games

Hello,
I am just curious, what age did you guys start playing? Also, how often do youi play per month. Also,
were there ever times where you took a break for a month or so.
Sorry for the strange post, I am just interested in seeing the experience you guys have.
Also, what is an average score for you.
-thanks

Re: A little about YOUR golf games

I started playing at 16 - played about five or six times that summer and shot mostly in the high 90's. Since then, my playing time has varied dramatically. In my college years, I played 20-30 rounds per year (average score in the low 80's), then dropped to about 10 per year in my 20's to early 30's (average score in the low 90's). Mid 30's to this year, I was lucky to play 5 times a year and a couple of those were in scrambles (still low to mid 90's).

I decided to dedicate myself this year to golf and joined a club. I use the range at least once a week and try to play at least once a week. My handicap has dropped from 20 in January to 11 as of this week. I'm averaging low 80's and will break 80 soon. I turn 39 tomorrow and plan on being a single digit handicapper for a long time to come.

Amazing what a little course management will do for your game. Playing as little as I did for the last decade, I only cared about hitting driver as far as I could on every hole. Remarkably, that was the best club in my bag, which is why I was a good scramble partner. I won several long-drive competitions over that stretch, but had no consistent game. Now, I hit driver on five holes at my home course and consistently hit greens in regulation. Much nicer than scrambling for bogeys.

Hope this is what you wanted to hear!

Re: A little about YOUR golf games

First time I started was around 1965. I was 10. It was with my dad's clubs.
All played in the neighborhood backyards... no fences back then.

Second time I started was around 1970. Fifteen going on sixteen. Played about
9 or ten times, then quit... I discovered girls, cars, surfing dirt bikes and street bikes.

The next 20 years golf wasn't cool (boy am I a dink) and I had gone to the deep end on
marriage, kids and Harleys.

Third time I started I was about 35. Played off and on for a few years, then got back into
dirt bikes with my teenage son.

Then the last time I started was about three years ago. Been playing since then with my son
and our friends.

Lots of starts and stops. I just wish I wasn't so gullible and peer pressured to stop playing 25
years ago. Imagine how good I could be now!

I play 1-3 times per month on eighteen, and 2-3 times per month on par-3 courses.

I'm a low-mid 90s shooter.

Re: A little about YOUR golf games

I walked onto a golf course for the first time when I was a freshman in college. Student discount meant a round was $7. I played with my grandfather, and he was a great coach and teacher. I learned a lot about course management, discipline, and approach to the game from him. I never was very good, though and quit playing after I quit college.

A few years later, after I got married, I started playing again. This time I could afford lessons, and I had a boss that was very good, and I welcomed his tips during a round together. He didn't care if I left work a little early to go play, I just had to ask him if he wanted to join me! I got fairly decent then, generally scoring in the low 90's.

Then came kids and a job change....

Now, at the urging of my 4 year old, I've picked up the game again. For some reason, he started bugging me to go golfing, so I bought him a junior club, and we've gone out a few times.

What's interesting is that each time I took up the game again (well, only twice), I was better then when I stopped playing. I'm not sure if this makes any sense, but that's the way it seems. Maybe just taking a break helps me appreciate the game more.

Anyway, there's my story.

Also, were there ever times where you took a break for a month or so. Aside from the 8 year break, I had a break of 1 1/2 years after a car wreck. Decided to start back, and I'm glad I did. I think more now than before, though I still don't think enough when it comes to course management.

Re: A little about YOUR golf games

I am a student of the game. I Started in late 2002 while stationed at Ft. Stewart, GA with a set of Power Bilt Citation blades. I ****** bad. Spent 2003 in Iraq. Bought a set of Mizuno T-zoid Sure irons and a Taylormade Burner SuperSteel driver, Adams GT 3 wood and Bullseye putter. Broke 100 and 90 for the first time during 2004. Hacked my way around alot of nice courses in southeast Georgia. Shot 120 on Eagle Pines at Disney and 114 on The Magnolia. Spent 2005 in Iraq. Bought MacGregor 1025 CM irons, Adams Redline driver and Odyssey 2-ball and started playing serious golf in early 2006. I now live in West Virginia and I'm a 13 handicap. I'm consistently in the 83-88 range. My low round ever is 81. I am self taught and I am supremely confident that I will be a scratch golfer one day. Sooner than later. I want to play to par on every course, not just "my home course." I am very competitive and I love golf. I wish I had started earlier in life, but I'll be 31 in August so I have plenty of good golf ahead of me. My son is 5 and says golf is the only sport he wants to play.

I play golf by the rules. No mulligans, no fluff lies, no foot wedges....I play it as it lies. I love this game and I would never compromise the integrity of the game. I am serious about being very good at this game.
I was really making strides early in the season this year. Getting more consistent with my driver and hitting several GIRs per round. The last time I played I shot 37 for 9 holes on a pretty good course. Then on June 10th I suffered a major setback. I was in a motorcycle accident (not my fault) and severely broke my left wrist. Atleast I got a titanium plate out of it!!! I am nervous because people (including my doctor) say my wrist will never be the same again, but that doesn't matter to me. I am determined to be scratch and play tournament golf. Small time, big time, doesn't matter to me. I want to play competitive golf. I want to feel the pressure of a stroke play event. I want to experience the head to head thrill of match play. I thrive on competition and now that my wrestling career is over I have golf to feed my need for competition. I know it's a stretch to think it can happen, being as few scratch golfers as there are, but I have faith and confidence in my athleticism and mental approach to the game.

"There must be a beginning of any great matter; but the continuing unto the end until it be thoroughly finished yields the true glory." -Sir Francis Drake

Re: A little about YOUR golf games

Started when I was in middle school when my friend lived within walking distance of a local course. Stopped playing after the summer of my 8th grade year.

Just started back up a few months ago when I met the woman and she's taken my game from 100+ to now into the 90's and even an 89 once.

Still working getting my handicap...GHIN is down right now

Re: A little about YOUR golf games

I started in May 2006. Some friends were playing Golf and i said i be interested in playing aswell. So, off to the range i went with them, and was supprised i could hit the ball (Well, ok for never hitting a golf ball properly before)

Browsed Ebay and picked some cheap clubs, driver and putter. Few weeks later got a set of Hippos that were on sale at the time.

After 2 months and 6 lessons, i got custom fit for my X-18's (Being 6'5 i was advised it be best due to my height etc)

Played mainly 9-12 hole courses for a few weeks, then joined a local club. Did'nt play over winter and started back Golfing around March, been training hard and back having lessons.

Built up a decent set of clubs now, and getting to play alot of good courses here in South Wales (Celtic Manor, Vale of Glam + others).

Normaly get to play 3-4 times a week on the course (Mainly 9 holes) if i dont get on the course i go to the range. I dont like having breaks now, had a 3 day break and i noticed a difference in my ball striking :(

Re: A little about YOUR golf games

Started because of my Step-dad...he began to teach my little brother when he was about 5 and he stayed interested for a couple years then decided he didnt want to play. So after that my step-dad decided to try and help me. Which was difficult b/c I played baseball for about 8 years so you can imagine the typical baseball swing in golf lol.

Then a couple friends got into it and started playing, we had a 9 hole course about 20 minutes away that was very open. It was basically just a big field with some flags here and there. We played up there until we got comfortable enough to go to a "real" course. Im about the only one that still plays, most of my friends got bored with it but my step-dad and I still play often.

Started at 15, im now 19. Play about 6 times a month, average mid-low 80's with hopes of breaking 80 this year. (I will have a chance today actually)

Re: A little about YOUR golf games

Well im 13 and have been playing golf for 3 years. I play a lot of tournaments (20-25 a year, single and multi-day) I try to play 18 everyday. I only go to the driving rangle when my swing feels weird or I'm practicing a new move in my swing otherwise I tend to lose focus and try to hit the ball picker

Re: A little about YOUR golf games

As a kid, I played a couple of times with my dad. Then I played casually during my 20's. Probably averaged 8-10 rounds a year. From 1999 - 2006, I probably played golf 10 times total. Last year, I moved from Oregon to North Carolina and met some neighbors who liked to play. So I really started playing seriously about a year ago. In that time, I've been playing 18 holes almost every weekend and going to the driving range a couple times a week. I'm now averaging low to mid 90s and my best two rounds were an 88 and a 90. I've only ever had 1 lesson and that was a few months ago. I'm frustrated right now because when I'm capable of hitting some great shots, but I can't seem to swing consistently for 18 holes. Heck, I can't seem to swing consistently for 1 hole. Last week, there was a hole where I hit my drive 250 right down the middle of the fairway, then followed it up by topping my 9 iron and having it roll 30 yds. Then on the next hole, I hit my drive into the woods, wasted a stroke having to punch out, then hit the most beautiful 8 iron that stopped 18 inches from the cup. The week before that, I shot by best 9 holes ever with a 43, then followed it up with a 51 on the back.

Re: A little about YOUR golf games

I played alot in the summe when I in my teens. My mother belonged in a golf league and me and my buddy would tag along and play on the other course. I was a big slicer and it kind of discouraged me from playing so when I went of to college I spent alot of time in the bowling alleys.

After I got married the only time I would really play would be when we went down to Myrtle Beach for vacation. We didn't really care what we shot, we were just there to drink beer and have fun.

I did not start playing seriously though until about two years ago. Alot of the people I was working with played alot, so I went out and bought myself new set of clubs and started taking some lessons to get rid of my slice. It has been a long process but I am swinging alot better now than I did before.

I love going out now. Be it the range or the course it has become a nice release for me. When things start bothering me I just go to the range, hit a bucket of balls or go over and putt for an hour.

How about YOUR info too?

I first swung a golf club on a golf course the summer after 10th grade... that would have been 1962. You couldn't call it playing golf though... me and my cousin sharing a bag with about 6 mismatched clubs, neither of us having a clue. I first played the game for real in 74 - 76, then took another long break (Colorado has just too many recreational opportunities - I was a backpacker and kayaker) until about 85, when I really got hooked. I'm 60 now and I'll play until I can't swing a club. I play about 3 times a week since I retired, and I average around 85 for a par 72 course.

Re: A little about YOUR golf games

I started to play golf about 2 years ago in my mid-50's (age, that is; score's were more like triple that ).

I play a 9hole league in the summer (weekly) plus 18 hole rounds maybe twice a month if you average it over the whole year. There's really only a few months in the dead of winter when I don't play at all.

My scores for 18 have dropped to the120-130 range (not what I'd like but I am seeing continual improvement).
