Overswing Help (Vid inside)

Well after what seemed like 2 months ofgood golf (in the 80's/low 90's) and good swings, I have developed an overswing this last week thats hard to shake off. This is probably due to overconfidence in my swing and trying to squeeze out a couple of more yards in my shots. It seems I only have this problem with 5 iron and lower, because I can hit 6 and above straight and crisp.

Vide: YouTube - 3h Swing

As you can see in the video, the overswing causes me to lose my balance on the follow through and get up on my toes resulting in a topped ball.

The purple line indicates the club shaft of the top of my swing, way past parallel. I would like to bring the club down to the green line. Does anyone have any tips or drills for curing an overswing? I have heard of the towel in the armp pits, is that a good one to practice?

Thanks a lot guys and gals

Re: Overswing Help (Vid inside)

Cut that swing in 1/2 and find a tempo. I promise you will retain/gain distance and accuracy. Some people believe golf is a power game. It's not. When I was in HS I would swing out of my shoes to hit the long ball. I'm now swinging at around 1/2 the effort and consistently out drive my HS average. This goes throughout the bag as well. Good rule of thumb. If you are on the range and sweating, you are working WAY to hard.

Good drill. Play barefoot for a while. Try it out on the range. It will be uncomfortable to roll up on the front foot, which is common in over swinging, therefor it will serve as a reminder to slow it down.

Another drill. (This is only to stop the club from getting beyond parallel, I don't recommend this as a long term fix) Tuck that back elbow in REAL tight. When you do this your simply wont be able to get that club passed parallel. That is of course unless you have extreme flexibility.

Lastly. STIFFEN THOSE WRISTS!!!! Stop flopping them things around. Stiffen them up and you will see a tremendous increase in consistency and accuracy.

Good luck. It'll come around.

Thanks mizuno for the tips! Practicing barefoot sounds kinda interesting, i might give that a shot next time I go out.

Here is another video, this time a view from the front (sorry about the quality):

Re: Overswing Help (Vid inside)

I am in exactly in the same boat as you mate and this problem breeds so much unconsistancey!

You find your start swinging properly, taking it not further then 10:30 and keeping the wrist firm, after a few good hits your swing a bit more and the wrists start to collapase etc

I have gone through this so i know how it feels, what i have done is set my washing line up so that if i swing past 10:30 i will touch the line and i know that i've gone to far.

Its amazing the problems overswing can cause. Balance issue, reversve pivot, lose of spine angle yet it does not feel like your doing it!!

Regarding distance, Mizuno is right, i have added so much more distance when i keep my swing controled thats its causing my scores to go bad through new distances with my clubs, On the course using a decent ball and a good contact my 6i is 200 yards where 3 months ago it was 170.

Trouble is i get so excited when i hit the ball good that i start to overswing and go backwards lol and end up getting a ing off my Instructor!
