Range Discovery

Hello all, I'm new here and loving the site. It's the first site I've found where everybody doesn't drive the ball 350 yards! Anyways, I have been playing now for almost 2 years and have gotten myself from the 110 range down to the mid to low 80's. I finally went and got a lesson this past Sunday and the pro helped me out a bit but ofcourse after I left his range it went to ****! The last three days I have been trying to replicate the lesson and although things were better I was still frustrated.

So yesterday at about the end of my range session I changed my grip from a 2 finger overlap to a 3 finger overlap with just the index finger and thumb from my right hand touching the shaft. I'm right handed and this felt a bit weird at first. That is until my first shot. I hit this beauty of a pitchwedge high and arrow straight with a 130 yard carry! I hit another and it was the same just 10 yards left of my aim. I have never hit nice high distance shots like that so I wanted to see what the other irons would do and man, it was the same. I was hitting nice high 150-160 yard 8 irons and just couldn't believe it.

Well I figured it was a fluke so I went back today and it was exactly the same. It was the best range session I have had in two years. These two older guys just stood there and watched me hit and couldn't believe the height I was getting and still carrying the distance. The only thing I can figure is the extra overlap is taking my right hand out of the swing and letting me compress the ball more. Has anyone else heard of this and do you think theres any downside to keeping up with this? My distance, height, and direction are just awesome and I can't see any fault with it. I would love some feedback.

Re: Range Discovery

I don't think there is any downside at all, as long as it works. You are probably right. It's keeping your right hand from ******** up your swing.

Re: Range Discovery

Sounds too me like you are not relaxing your hands and wrist. By changing your grip with the right hand, you removed half of the problem. Think of the hands and wrist being a well greased ball and socket hinge that only reacts to the forces of gravity, inertia, and centrifugal force.

Re: Range Discovery

I know of a golf pro who has his students grip the club in practice with no fingers of the right hand touching the club, but completely enclosing the left. Promotes a better release and generates more club head speed.
