Lightbulb A drill for drives and other strokes

I used this drill at the driving range, while I was studying some problems with my shoulders turn plane.

The idea is to hit the driver with a full swing, but as slow as possible. The swing must be as much as possible the same you'd use in "real life", loose and without extra tension, only slower, much slower . Try to send the ball straight but not more than 50 yards. That's not easy! Even if you (full) swing a driver as slow as a snail the ball pops up and lands between the 50 and 100 markers.

Each individual swing must not be at a constant but at a progressive speed: accelerating from snail slow, to very slow, to quite slow, until "slow" (impact).

Then hit more balls adding a little bit of speed each time, trying to keep the ball within 75, then 100, then 125, then 150 yards. Even then you may feel that you're swinging at a small percentage of your potential speed. Then add just another little bit of speed until you get to your usual distance. If you get there using less speed and strength than usual, it means that there's a waste of strength and it's time to find out were the spare movement is.

This way it's easier to spot possible bad moves and to muscle-memorize the good ones. Blind moves become visible. I tried this also with some irons with good results.

Re: A drill for drives and other strokes

This is a very good drill, i have heard of many pro golfers that do this. I'm not sure but i think it was Tom Kite that did this on a regular basis. Sure did'nt do him any harm. I have had a go at this drill in the past and found it difficult not to go with your natural tendencies although with more practice i'm sure i will get it right.

Re: A drill for drives and other strokes

There was a show on the golf channel where a beginner was getting lessons, and the pro asked the new guy to pay the pro 10 bucks everytime he hit the ball past a certain distance.. It was suppose to make the beginner slow his swing down..

Re: A drill for drives and other strokes

Well i have been struggling with the dreaded snap hook with my Driver. last time out I slowed it down and just tried to work on the weight transfer and I hit most Fairways. The few times I tried to uncork one back came the **** hook. Which tells me maybe due to aging that it isn't my swing back perhaps I can't release my hips and get on the front leg fast enough anymore. I never ever hooked the ball when I was young. So i may be on to something my fast twitch muscles may be ready for social security, So I will swing easy next time out also and see what happens. It is funny though with my 3 Wood off the deck I can swing as hard as I want to and never Hook the ball.
