A few months back I posted a thread asking about my back problems while golfing... Since then my back has rarely hurt on the course and it has given me time to actually play golf and not use the excuse oh my back hurts today. But I'm not enjoying the game because of my iron play. With wedges, I'm decent. Nothing to complain ust need to practice. With woods, same as the wedges. But with the irons, and I'm talking pretty much all of them including wedges (if I do a full swing) I get teh same result. They all shoot off to the right... not slicing just shooting straight to the right about 75 yards far. Doesn't really matter to much the club whether its 7 iron or 9 iron, same distance. It's frustrating thinking it doesnt matter what club I hit because it will go the same distance. Any thoughts? I will try and get pics up of my stance and such soon but it's hard due to teh fact my brother has the camera... and he's in Oregon. Thanks for future replies
For whatever reason you hitting the ball with the club face wide open. I can't help but to wonder what effects your back problems have had on your swing? I would guess that you're just using your hands to insure you don't put pressure on your back, and that would result in all sorts of problems. This might be a good time to think about lessons. A good instructor could help you find the best swing for you, and that would be the one that puts the least amount of stress on your back.
well my back has been fine lately... im not an old man at all im only 18 i just have a birth hting with my spine. but today at the range i felt a little pain.. but with woods i feel great and same with wedges. i think with irons i get stressed because i feel theres no way this will work and just stress out and pressure myself and hit it bad and wrong. there were maybe 3 shots where i felt ok that was a good controlled shot. (couldnt see where it was going i was hittin into the sun) thanks a lot for your reply.... and lessons might come depending on money
Not a great golfer here, but something I do to prevent the ball from going right (unintentionally), would be paying attention to head level and movement throughout the stroke, spine level throughout the stroke, hand and arm speed in reference to body turn. As far as Irons going the same distance... what might work is putting tape on your club face and check your ball mark on the face after the strokes to see if you are hitting the sweet spot. You might be hitting too low and chunking your shots. Hope that back of yours gets fixed, and hope you can enjoy the game more soon. =)
Pain has a funny way of making your subconscious say "don't do that!", and hitting irons can potentially be painful (to anyone and at any age). With woods and wedges (short shots) you're probably letting the weight of the club do most of the work using mostly the arms (no stress on the back). That same swing is not work with irons, and for any number of reasons. A pro might be able to help you find a swing that works with all of your clubs, and is comfortable. If you can't do lessons and decide to stay with your current swing, you may want to try hybrids. They would be a lot closer to hitting woods and you would have that extra weight that irons lack.
