Help with Grip

Hello all.

I have a very large fascination with what type of equipment the pros use, how they use it, and any superstitions, etc. This, for whatever reason, drives my dad crazy. For some reason he always thinks I don't understand the superiority of the pros to me, and he thinks if I learn how the pros spin the ball and such, that I'll try to do it, which I will not.

I have been using an overlap grip for awhile, but recently I have started to try out the interlock at the range.

I have seen nothing but interlock use by pros and teachers and everyone. Is the overlap frowned upon and my dad is just telling me that some people do use it?

I think he may be discouraging my switch to interlock because at the range, well, I haven't been hitting the balls too well with the interlock grip.

Which grip should I practice more? I seem to hit the overlap better...

Thanks for any help!

Re: Help with Grip

I think only a few pros use the interlock. Nicklaus says he uses it because his hands are small. Tiger said he started using it because Nicklaus uses it, but I think Tiger does not use it with all shots. Most pros use the overlap. Jim Furyk and Steve Jones have used a double overlap. I don't know if they still do.

Use what works best for you.

Use the overlap then. There is no need to make this game more difficult than it already is.

Re: Help with Grip

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I will stick with the overlap.

Just out of curiosity, what is the double overlap? Heh, not that some of Furyk's other mechanics are something to go by...

Does anyone know any other pros who use the overlap in some sort?

Double overlap = pinkie and ringfinger of the lower hand covering the higher hand.

No pros using the overlap immediately come to mind (I guess I don't pay much attention to that), but there are plenty. It wouldn't surprise me if they were in the majority.

Hmm, yeah. I think I'll give that a few shots try just to see how it feels next time at the range-I want to try everything before I make my decision. I'll likely stick with overlap grip though.

Re: Help with Grip

haha yeah...I do say though, after one of my buddies at the range tried a Happy Gilmore shot, I decided to try a Furyk swing and the result wasn't as bad as one would think it would end up.

Thanks for all the help guys-I'm playing a round tomorrow, hopefully the overlap will continue to work for me.
