Has this EVER happened to anyone.. I am about a 10 Handi..and hit the range at least twice a week sometimes more... Just finished playing the weekend before in a tournament..shot an 80 and 82..... Ok then on Tuesday night I go to the range to hit some balls..after a few warm up chip shots...I pull out on 8 iron.......Shank...I said wow wassup with that...Then another shank..than another...I hit a half a bucket..was ******..and completely out of tempo.. I stopped at a half a bucket and went home. Waited a couple of days... Went to the range.. Still Huge Slices with no distance.. You can tell by my divot marks ..its on over the top swing.. cutting across the ball.. Next night called my golfing buddy to go the range and watch what im doing.. First thing he notices..My alignment was way to the right...ok I fix that..by laying clubs on the ground... But still..I have the wicked over the top. Im off balance..cant rotate..Just Completely Out of wack!..MY Buddy tried every swing tip..hitting with feet together..hitting with right leg way back...etc etc. I waited a couple more days..went to the range again..Anything past a chip shot..Is a shank or really weak slice.. I hit a seven iron maybe 100 yards..when I normally hit it 165..give or take.. ITs like Im a beginner.... OK ANY TIPS..ANY HELP... my buddy thinks I should take a long break ..forget the swing..then come back..... Actually I dont want to even play a golf course right now, cause I cant even hit a ball at a driving range... Has This ever happend to Anybody... One other thing.. I have been going to the chiro..to have my back adjust for the last to months...But I really dont think it has alot to do with it....
Good luck, thats all I can say really. It took me out of the game for year before I recovered from the Shanks. They kept popping back everytime I was starting to play well!
I worked on my posture, which has helped alot, haven't shanked anyhting for ages now!
Shanks are pretty easy to get out of and it's most likely the way in which you look at the ball that is doing it. Stop looking and concentrating on the ball so much and they will disappear. In other words, stop trying to keep your head down and eye on the ball.
do the Annika thing that she does by looking at the target before she hits the ball. Go look up her book and see the drill she used that made her such a great success. If you take the advice your shanks will never return but if you do not they will be hear for a long time.
Focus on your finish. I know that seems probably way outta whack, but if you finish in balance and with your arms out in front of you the over the top move will go away.
As for the shank, usually that comes from poor setup. The two are not linked.

Help
Yes this happened to me on a few occasions, maybe twice a year for a 10 day period. I also play off 10 and have honestly returned a slightly better golfer every time after the shanks have gone, i hope the same happens for you.
One thing i can say although it's really difficult is to not let it beat you up too much. Be positive, think only of good golf not the recent bad shots. I also believe in he who seeks will find, as we are all different we need to look individually for the answers, do some searches on this site and others, you never know, the answers you seek could be just round the corner. Most important is when you go back to hitting balls stay relaxed with a light grip, a clear head and just let it happen.
Hope this helps,
I have the exact same problem about the distance loss and slicing-especially with the driver. Hope someone can help. It's frustrating for some like me with a 10 handicap. Slice is a beginners problem, it's embarassing.
Try getting your right shoulder under your chin on the down swing and think about your hands heading towards the target.
This for me makes sure i have a descending blow with the hands leading the club and putts me on the correct swing path.
If my hands dont lead the club head and its vice versa, that gives me a over the top chop and depending on club face leads to slice/hook 80% of the time a hook in my case.
The shoulder under the chin bit. Well, i had a habit of turn my shoulder around, so the clubs swings outside the line and back in leading again either slice/hook depending on club face open/closed
