Swing Plane Confusion.

Over the last two weeks i've been working alot on my swing plane. It was ridiculously flat, and ive managed to steepen it quite a bit, and my ball striking has improved loads (hit 14 GIR last round...15 hdcp) but need to know exactly where it should be.

I've looked at loads of conflicting opinions about where the club should be when it reaches vertical (if viewed from the front).

Some say the but of the club should point to the target line(or slightly inside), while others say the shaft should be parallel to the club at address, but doesn't need to point to the target line (if it is parallel to the club at address it would point outside the target line)

Which of these is correct and why, or are both correct and i've just explained one of the differences between a 1 plane and a 2 plane swing.

Re: Swing Plane Confusion.

I am afraid there is no right answer to your question as there are too many variables involved. Like any good instructor I have had the pleasure it is a ball park or a range that is acceptable. Best way I heard it describes is to take the club up to the top and note the right elbow position.

The bottom of the range is where the right elbow is down and just barely touching your side. The upper limit is when the right elbow is about 8 to 12 inches away from the body and pointing down. Anywhere between that range is acceptable.

Re: Swing Plane Confusion.

I'm not usually too concerned with how someone takes the club back, but I am concerned about the swing going forward.

Ideally there would be a plane of glass that goes from where your club is to the ball that your club would stay on.

Re: Swing Plane Confusion.

I agree that swing plane can be different for different people.

However, one thing I had read was to visualize a clock on the ground. The ball is in the middle of the clock. The target is at 12:00. You straddle the 9:00, your backswing exits at 7:00 and then your downswing enters at 7:00 and exits the clock (upon striking the ball) at 1:00 for the correct swing path.

Visualize a second clock over your right shoulder to check the top of your swing. Your head is pointing straight-up 12:00. A VERY flat swing would then be at 3:00. The ideal swing would then have the club over your shoulder at 1:00.

A third clock on your left shoulder would illustrate the proper finish. A the top of the swing your club should be at 10:30.

In summary, you bring the club back at 7:00 all the way to the top at 1:00....down back thru 7:00, strike the ball and exit the clock at 1:00. Finish at 10:30. The result is a perfect shot...as long as you've got the right grip, alignment, tempo, etc as well!

Using this analogy a slice swing plane would be from 5:00 to 1:00 (inside to out)

This seems to work well for me anyway....:)

Re: Swing Plane Confusion.

I had a similar problem, here is what finally worked for me. I bought a book called The Golf Rascal's ABC of Golf by Mauritz Leen. I saw improvement immediately and have dropped 9 strokes off my game and I'm enjoying myself again on the course. Check it out, here is a link to the book. The Golf Rascal's ABC of Golf
