4 or 5 years into the game now. finally can hit a driver 240 on the fly straight ....9 out of 10 times.. 460cc driver.
Question: am i nuts to want to drive it more ? necessary in the game ? for a mid hc'er should I not bother with all the time to go further? yes i already know , work on the short game...but curious about other's quests!
240 yards is a detriment to scoring. You have to lean on your longer irons more often, which for most is not a pretty sight in terms of score. I would work to get at least 260-280 for a max all that takes is to swing faster flexability training should help you do that
20 yards extra drives will mean you have a 7 iron in your hand instead of a 4-5 iron or a PW instead of an 8 iron. which is a big deal
Valid argument, viper, but he said he was flying it to 240 which should be rolling out to 250 or 260 at least...if it's not then trajectory may be too high. Personally, I'd take straight over long any time. Jake, don't give up on the quest for more length off the tee but don't give up any accuracy in doing so.
Hitting 300 yard drives is only enviable if you can hit them straight. When your driving game is off you can get into a lot more trouble when your long drives go wayward. I've even started using my 3 iron off the tee most of the time now which gives me about 230-260 down the middle 80% of the time, which I MUCH prefer to 300 yard drives scattered everywhere.
No, you're not nuts to want 300....Being long in golf is a huge advantage, just like being tall in basketball. Myabe a club fitter could get you into a club that will give you the optimum distance.
Accuracy is great, but I'd take 300 in the first cut of rough over 240 in the fairway anyday.
250 downn the middle is far better than 280 in the rough.
I'll give you that. But there are degrees of this. Is 310 in the rough better than 240 in the fairway? I'd say so. You're talking about 4-5 clubs difference on the next shot. That's what the crop of younger PGA players are thinking now with the bomb and gouge strategy.
Adding 60 yards to your drive sounds like a stretch. I presume you driving your ball 240 yards including roll. I would aim at maybe taking a lesson and see what the pro thinks. But even if you could add another 20 yards then that would be huge in your game. Most of scoring is done around the green so a 240 yard drive down the middle is a great start.
everyone wants to be longer, even john daly and j.b. holmes. it CAN affect your scoring, but as always, you MUST have a good short game to capitalize on your driving distance. i drive the ball 300+ yards which allows me to hit pitch shots which i practice a lot. so if i can hit the ball reasonably straight and solid, i can usually get a birdie look at it because most of the courses out here have short par 4's (300-425 yards). and you can also go for it on par 5's too.
I'm 60 and I learned how to increase my club head speed almost 20 MPH. 20 MPH of swing speed, can equal 30 MPH of ball speed, and you can gain 2.6 yards of carry with every MPH of ball speed you gain. So, YES, it can be done. It all depends on you, your swing, now fit you are, and if you can figure out how to max out your speed. Not long ago, a 95 swing was pretty good for me, now I've managed to reach 116. Not bad for a 60 year old guy that 30 pounds over weight. Just don't do it if it means missing all those fairways you're hitting now.

no,... as i note it is 240 carry only....i agree with seeing what a pro would add...I was mostly wondering with game stategy ....if being 300.... would change my scores dramatically in relation to the time it might take to get there!

yeah, so you are coming down on the side of go for it...invest the time and energy to drive farther ..........as long as it is fairway ...it will make a big enough difference...thanks for the input fellas ...i will get there.....
