Long iron problems

Hey guys... I am having problems lately with my long irons. I have noticed that i am beginning to slice them horribly. The distance is the same for the most part just they are taking off to the right. I am about a 12 handicap. I can hit my fairway woods awesome and all my other irons for the most part. Help please!

You're going to have a dozen replies telling you to get hybrids, but it'll be good for your game to re-tool your swing and learn to hit the long irons again.

In my opinion, it's really hard to hit a draw with long irons with swing path alone. Whenever I hit a draw with my 2 or 3 iron, I make sure I strengthen my grip a little to ensure the clubface will be closed at impact. Try slowing your tempo down a little to give yourself time to square the face.

By that, do you mean that the ball starts right, and stays there? If so, it sounds more like a push than a slice - especially with the distance staying roughly the same. If it starts right, and goes farther right, then that would be a push-slice. It's possible that you're just trying to swing too hard, and not getting the club closed at impact.
Think about what the ball is actually doing, and post it back here please. I'm sure someone will be more than happy to try and help you through this.

Martini78 is right about people telling you to get hybrids. They're fantastic clubs for people who don't have time to practice as much as they should.

Re: Long iron problems

My quick and and dirty way-Rotate your forearms outward like you are turning the wheel left, but make sure you turn inside-out before impact..might try just keeping your head down and that always helps a bit when folks slice.

The correct way would take awhile assuming your stance is not open.If you are swinging correctly,a long iron should not be all that different than any club in the bag... a slice is an outside in motion with hip,or shoulder,or elbow,or hands or all of the above or any combination of above..No one would know unless they actually see your swing.

i would try doing a drill on the range were you start your backswing and go to were your club are 90 degrees and then come down. this will help you release the club and will help with the slice /pull

Re: Long iron problems

Its possible you could have the ball to far forward in your stance. Recently i had a week where i couldnt hit my 3 or 4 i, worked out it was to forward and moved it back an inch.

Also, it took a while to get it into my head, but you dont really need to swing hard with the long irons! If you try swinging the 3i like a 9i, your more then likey going to have a out to in swing.

My easiest swings are with my long Irons, just let the club do the work. I just try to keep it nice and smooth. I also have a slighty more strong grip too
