Driver vs. Irons

I am just getting back into golf after a 5 year layoff for other hobbies. I bought a 460X driver and a used set of Callaway X14 Pro series steel shafts to get started back. When I quit I was hitting a Dunlop cheapo 7 iron 140 yards, 6 iron 160. Now that I am starting again my 6 and 7 irons are only going about 100-125 and the ball flight is flat and ugly. I am playing the ball up in my stance and hitting my driver 250 straight as an arrow, I am playing the ball in the center of my stance for my irons and they are going right every time. No part of my swing changes from driver to irons. What should I be changing to try to correct ball flight and are the X14s not forgiving enough for me to start back with.

Re: Driver vs. Irons

The driver swing is more of a sweep than the iron swing. With the iron you swing down more.
If you are going right you also may be setting up to close to the ball. Get into your setup stance and let your arms hang down lazily. That is where your arms should be for your swing.
Without seeing your swing this is just a guess.
You may be letting your hips get ahead of your arms or you may be hitting with an open face on your irons.
Just some thoughts.
Good Luck.
Welcome back.

Re: Driver vs. Irons

I'll bet he is hitting the Irons thin. Although I have played for years I finally am having more success with Irons by as the previous poster said to let your arms hang down lazily.
What also helps is to know your swing speed because that will determine how far the ball will go. In the past when I saw that my perfectly stuck 7 Irons were only going 135-140 yards I would keep trying to change my swing until i was totally messed up. I now know that a 85 MPH swing with a 7 Iron will only get you 135 yards. When I hit them farther I was younger and of course back then there was no way to measure swing speed but I will bet I have lost 10-15 MPH from my younger days.

Re: Driver vs. Irons

I figured out my problem, I was keep my swing plane flat hitting the ball toward the heel of the club. I went and played by myself the other day during the week so I wouldnt feel rushed and started coming straight over the top and down on the ball and hit my 6 iron 155 or so consistantly. Next question, I am missing a few clubs in my bag right now. I have driver and full set of irons. I plan on getting a new set of irons fitted and all the good stuff in about a month. Should I invest in 3W and 5W or just 3W and 3,4,5 hybrids?

Re: Driver vs. Irons

i wouldnt get too many hybrids. I would say go with 4-pw, get some wedges, a 3 hybrid, 3 wood, and whatever 2 iron you want to hit low punch shots under trees.

Re: Driver vs. Irons

One Hybrid is enough. This week I put the regular 4 Iron back in the bag and just left the 3 Hybrid. I am hitting the regular 4 Iron real well. I may even order the Regular 3 Iron for my set.
