Hitting down on ball issues

Hi all, lately I've been trying to master hitting down on the ball, as we are meant to. Have concentrated on the short irons and noticed a decent improvement in ball flight when I get it right. My 9 iron has gone from average 125 yds to 140, for example, with better accuracy !!
What I want to know is, do we still hit down with the long irons? And what about woods & utility clubs?
And what about teeing up for a short par 3? Surely if it's teed up the ball doesn't get squeezed into the turf properly, or does it ?
Steve

Re: Hitting down on ball issues

Most of the longer shafted clubs you won't have as much of a descending blow. Some play them as a pick and some hit slightly down. I generally sweep the longer clubs but if I want more spin I will hit down a touch. There won't be a ton of carry difference but there will be some run difference. If you watch Tiger he takes a divot with his 2 and 3 iron and he definitely hits down on them.

Re: Hitting down on ball issues

To answer your question fast and to the point....YES! I think it is even more important to have a "descending blow" with long irons because there is less loft to get the club in the air. (especially from a tight lie) It doesn’t really matter if the ball is Tee’d up or not. If you hit down on it, chances are good that the ball will go up!
