Got the Shanks
So this fall, I played for my highschool golf team. I was playing great in the beginning of the season, never posting anything higher than 80. I was starting to pull the ball after a while though, and I tried to work with my dad on fixing this. Instead, it led to something much worse.
After making some swing changes. Now, all I can do is shank it and every once in a while hit a semi-decent shot. Ive had a lot of scores in the high 80's low 90's lately because of this, and you can imagine how embarassing this is when I go play.
I'm sure everyone goes through these phases, it is just something that will go away with time. However, I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions on how to bounce back from this mentally? My confidence is shot right now and because of that my putting and short game are also suffering as well. How can you possibly gain back confidence when you are constantly worrying about shanking every shot? Clearly, the answer is obvious: Don't think about shanking it. Im just not sure how to go about this. Any suggestions on how to approach every shot mentally? Thanks.

Those guys don't remember the last shot you made, why should you? Maybe if you skanked three in a row but other than that they aren't gonna take note...so mark embarrassing off the list. I agree that it is hard to muster confidence over a shot when your last two were hosel rockets. Just keep in mind that every golfer, to some extent, has to completely re-invent him or herself on every shot whether your hitting it well or not. Start lining that ball up a little more on the toe and swing like you mean it. Start each shot with a fresh mind. Your analytical mind already knows how good you are and suspects how good you can be.

shaderunner has hit the nail on the head once again.
aslo if you dont want to shank it movefurther away from the ball.
i that doesnt work check your swing plane, and make sure you are not coming outside in, or extremely inside out. it sounds tough but it'll work!

Re: Got the Shanks
Thanks guys. Everything is going much better now after a few lessons. Crazy a tiny hitch in your swing can get you completely off right?
Unconditional confidence is something that I will definitely work on for next year. Overall, my mental game is pretty good for a highschool kid, but its always tough to think positively when you are living in fear of a hosel rocket.
