Hit my new driver for the first time at the course and couldn't hit it straight for nothing. at the range the other day I was drilling it. here is the tee marks on the bottom of my club. I don't think my swing path is right. the marks are by the 460 on the club head. What could I be doing wrong?
Definitely weren't hitting it with a draw, right? Those are slice swing marks, swinging outside-in, "cutting" the ball...some on the toe, some on the heel. You need to swing from the inside-out and find the center of the clubface.
I am guessing the opposite: Stand a bit further from the ball. The heel-shots seem to have gone pretty straight, but the toe shots were badly sliced. Moving the ball a bit futher might move the straight shots over to the sweet-spot, and creates more room to come from the inside.
Well I play all of my clubs off the inside of my left foot. I think I solved my problem today at the course. I realized since I was in Jr. High (10yrs ago) I have had a bad slice so I have that programmed in my head. So when I swing I try to pull the club to the left which just gives it more spin. today I tried to swing twards (inside-out) it the direction of the slice and drove the green on a par 4 it was 310 from the tees I was about 20ft. to the right of the pin. From then on I hit it the same way great distance actually slowing down my swing some. I also went to the golf shop this morning and had my swing tested for a new shaft and they said I needed a S+ shaft. which is in between a stiff and X-stiff. my driver is a stiff shaft now so I am gonna go with that. thanks for the help guys.
You're definetly cutting across the ball, that's a power leak and it's gonna be tough to get a consistent ball flight when you do that. Because if the face is open, you'll hit a big slice, if its square like it should be, you'll hit a pull or maybe hook it too. I'd say you need to concentrate on your transition from the backswing to the downswing, because it's a very good bet you're coming over the top. That comes from starting the downswing with the arms and shoulders instead of the lower body. You need to get your weight onto your right foot on the backswing, and shift it back to the left foot to start the downswing.
*One tip that helps me with my weight shift: Roll your ankles during the swing. So on your backswing, the outside part of the left foot can come off the ground. Then roll your right foot coming through. This was one of main elements of Jack Nicklaus' swing.
