Try this: the Proper "Wrist Set" on your backswing
THIS WILL WORK I PROMISE YOU!
To feel the proper wrist set for you, hold the club as you would with your left hand (if you are a righty). Then, with your right hand, grab your left forearm just below your wrist with your thumb on top of your left forearm. Put yourself in a good setup position and make a backswing to the half way – three quarters position and allow your left wrist to “set” as you take it back.
At the half way position, the butt of the grip should be pointing down towards the ground and you will find the club in a perfect “set” position.
The reason for this is because in order for your left wrist to support the club on its own, the club must be in a position that is lightest and easiest to hold, and on plane!
This position of your arm, club, and wrist is a key point in your backswing. If you can pass through this position on your backswing and maintain the same angle of your left wrist and club during transition, your swing will become more consistent.
If you are a lefty, follow the instructions and switch the words left and right.

The only way the club will feel it lightest is if it is plumbed straight up and down, which is not necessarily the correct position. If the club was truly on plane and you stopped half way up, the shaft angle would tilted at a right angle to your spine angle pointing behind you and the butt at the target line; you would feel the pressure of the club trying to fall in the direction it is leaning.

Are you sure it is "below the wrist". That puts my right hand basically on the crook of my hand and forearm.
Hi,
yes place your hand on your forearm, just below and clear of your wrist joint! (whether you feel it is above or below; I debated with that myself when I wrote the thread lol !)
I will post some pics when I find my USB adapter to upload them off my camera!

The position of the club you have described almost corresponds to the Leadbetter swing theory. The shaft tilting with a right angle between your arm and the club, but on plane and not vertical to the ground (If I have understood you correctly). I personally feel that the level of wrist hinge or set he calls for is extreme.
He feels that the wrist should be pretty much in position at half way back. I think that every body part should be in sync, gradually load, and be complete at the same time: the top of the swing.
It seems unnatural to position your arms and wrist, and then position your upper body. I like to keep everything working together and in sync in one piece.
This drill helps your brain "feel" positions in your backswing that will give you a square clubface and good plane.
