ballooning ball flight

I am having MAJOR ballooning problems in my upper irons (7-8-9-10-PW) i have 2004 big bertha cavity backs, does that have ANYTHING to do with it? i heard cavity backs tend to balloon but i didnt know it was only in certain clubs. its embarrassing im only hitting my 8 iron about 120-130 because it balloons so much

I am not personally familiar with those clubs, but I am tempted to say that it is not the clubs. I used to hit my irons too high (and short), but managed to fix it with the same set of clubs. Can you post a video of your swing with the short irons in a face-on view?

PS A 130 yard 8-iron may not be "great golf", but its certainly not embarissingly short. You can play a round of golf with that.

Make sure your alignment is correct, if you are too open, you will naturally have to push your shots too the right to get them online, and will result in a weak, high shot, like you are describing.

What is your swing speed and what type of shafts are you using?

If your using regular shafts, or even graphite shafts, this is likely your problem

Re: ballooning ball flight

It's probably not the cubs, but it's tough to say. Everyone has a different swing and that causes different results with each set of clubs. I have 07 Big Bertha's and also hit them high, but it's my swing and not the clubs. My friends that hit the ball low hit these low as well, and I also hit the ball high with blades. And yes cavity backs can balloon easier, but all clubs can do it.

Re: ballooning ball flight

My friend does this, and sometimes its amazing how high he gets the ball. But his distance is not very good.

On the back swing he opens the club massively, i dont think you can get it any more open, then on the downswing (Which he swings out to in) he slides the club under the ball. he hits it with the toe of the clubhead (Well i think its the toe, the side of the clubhead away from the shaft).

I got him to stop opening the club on the backswing and he gain 40 yards on his clubs and the height was much more normal

Re: ballooning ball flight

I had a set of cavity back irons,X-16's, and I never had a ball balloon with any of my irons, Not even the wedges. High ball flight? YES, Ballooning , NEVER. Even with the high ball flight I still hit my 8 iron 165 carry. I"d say it's you and not the golf clubs.

WOW

I hit my 8 around 135 mark.

To OP, I believe it's a combination between clubs and your swing. The max game improvement irons are designed to get the ball up quickly due to more weight at the sole of the clubs, higher moi, low kick point from graphite shaft, and most likely regular flex, plus if you open the club face then it's going to be even higher.

And if your swing flips at the ball, instead of hitting down, that creates more problems with distance and balooning flight.
