Slowing down tempo

When I was on the course I was hitting bad shots. But when I slowed down my tempo I hit some great shots. But I struggle at slowing down my tempo. So I was wondering if there is any drills to help keep a nice and slow tempo.

Thanks

Re: Slowing down tempo

Think....

one, two...

or one, seventeen.

That should help. I've been trying to work on tempo for a while now as well.

Practice with a heavy club...all the counting doesn't work at all for me personally, the heavy club gets you paying attention to the weight of the club in the swing, and the centrifigual pull...learning to swing the weight will translate into being able to swing the weight throughout your set and will automatically be the appropriate tempo regardless of the club in your hand...

Re: Slowing down tempo

I forgot to add that I don't need to slow down my tempo on the backswing. It is the downswing that I just go way to fast on.

Re: Slowing down tempo

I have this same problem, Tempo, I tried counting it worked for a little bit, I also tried to feel the momentum of the club, but I always go back to fast...fast...fast! Destroying what ever chance I have to hitting the ball right...I may try the drill above...Last round I tried slowing my backswing and I was able to hit really good shots...I just can't seem to do it all the time...arrghh!

Re: Slowing down tempo

Slowing down is not the answer. Quick tempo equals faster club head speed, faster club head speed equals longer distance, longer distance equals competative advantage. I was a 30+ handicapp and decided to go take some lessons. The first thing my swing coach did (who is the assistant golf coach at Cal Berkley) was put a David Leadbetter Swing Setter in my hand Leadbetter Online :: Official Website of the World's Leading Golf Instructor and increased my tempo. Increasing my tempo meant hitting my 5 iron 200 yards rather than hitting it 160.

Your tempo isn't causing you to not hit the ball well, it's the other moving parts. You always hear people say to have a nice relaxed easy swing, sure that's fine, but you still need to generate club head speed to hit the ball 300 yards. It's about swinging faster, not harder.

I swear by the Swing Setter and highly recomend it.
