interlock grip question - don't see this info addressed anywhere
So, I've been using the interlock grip, but have had trouble releasing my hands through impact. Normally I would try to interlock/stretch the right pinky/left index (I'm right-handed) as far down the back of the palm, towards the wrists, as possible without enabling a death-grip pressure on the club.
Lately I've been interlocking my fingers so that the very tip of the right pinky/left index rest in the webbed area between the digits. The top phalangeal joint of the right pinky finger would line up with the middle phalangeal joint of the left index finger. And the top phalangeal joint of the left index finger would line up with the middle phlangeal joint of the right pinky. With this grip change, it seems that releasing my hands is easier to achieve.
Is my new grip the proper way to grip the club, or is my new grip a completely unorthodox band-aid fix for my failure to release the club head properly? It works for me, but my concern is by using this new grip, I might be failing to address a more glaring flaw in my swing which prohibits me from releasing the club properly.
I try to maintain light grip pressure, and relaxed forearms throughout my swing.

Ernie Els preaches holding the club in the fingertips in his book (late 90's, maybe early 00's), and I believe Jack Nicklaus teaches the same in his book/video Golf My Way. I interlock and my grip is like the one you describe in your second paragraph. I've never had a problem with release.

As near as I can interpret your post, I agree with Martini. It sounds like you had been using an extremely strong right hand position, and have now moved more toward neutral, which is really the correct to place to start from. Without actually seeing your setup, that's about all that one can deduce.
There are numerous sites where you can see photos of the proper neutral grip, and most show how to lay the shaft along your fingers to achieve that grip. Just Google "golf grip". About.com has a good photo sequence.

I use an interlocking grip, and the tip of my left index finger sits on top of the knuckle of my right pinkie. and the tip of my right pinkie sits between the index and middle finger of my left hand, just short of the knuckles. I hope that makes sense to you. I don't have any problem releaseing the club, as long as I remember to have a loose grip and relaxed hands. Your second position you describe, sounds about right. Use it and see if it continues to work for you. Good luck with this.

Grip the club only with your top hand, and hold the club in front of you. you should be able to lift your pinky and ring finger off the club and still support the club with your index finger and lower palm. Achieving this will force you to grip it in the fingers and not in the palm to allow for a better release. Also be sure your right hand is neutral.
