:I am now between clubs on tee or fairway shots of 150 -160 .. I now hit my 5 wood too far, same with my 3 and 4 hybrids. . my irons still left in my bag .... of which i rarely hit off the tee.... start at a 6 iron...which is 150 160 but requires a great flush shot (rare still w/ me and irons!) ....
i have some success choking down on the 5 wood but lose loft this way...so i may put the 7 wood in the bag till i feel confident and eventually go to an 4 or 5 iron...
anyway I bet others at this stage of their game have faced this issue...advice?
There are a variety of clubs designed to be hit very similar distances...a given distance could be approached with a fairway wood, a hybrid wood type, a hybrid iron type, a super game improvement iron or a muscleback...all the clubs designed to hit the ball a similar distance with a given swingspeed, the only variable being user preference...
I say go for it, whatever you feel the most comfortable with will most likely yield the best results!
ok, yeah, that makes sense, go to a higher lofted hybrid..(.i actually had been watching those bobby jones hybrids on ebay etc.) . maybe replace my six iron with that...
i know better players would just whip out their longer blades, ( or they get much more distance with their 7-9irons) but i don't get the consistency yet , with those long irons, or the distance i want yet with the shorter irons.
I carry a 5 and 7 wood because I am very inconsistent with a 3 wood and a 5 wood for me is not a whole lot shorter. My 7 wood is about a 210yd club while my 5 wood is about 230 I do not carry a hybrid at the moment and I love my 7 wood. I hit it very well, for me it is easier to hit than a 3 hybrid. You really have to experiment and find what works for you. My suggestion is to not be so concerned with what others carry and really work on finding what works best for your game. Either one (hybrid or F.W.) would be worthless if you cannot hit it straight or consistently.
Keep in mind that my advice on fairway woods and hybrids is strictly theoretical. 90 to 95% of my strokes that aren't putts are made with irons or wedges. I just like hammering irons.
once again, guys, thanks for the advice. and i am not focused on what others carry...... just looking to fill a distance gap between (less consistently hit) 6 iron and up and my 3HY , 4HY , 5W....
Speaking of which...Generally speaking, what club would go further 5W or 3H? I had a guy make me a 3H to fill a gap btwn 4H and 3W but I am having difficulty w/a low, hooking ball flt from the 3H. He lent me a 5W he had laying around and I hit it great but didn't get a real feel for the distance.
