club turns at apex of swing...

yeah, so when i get to the top of the swing, my hands shift in a way that causes the club to be closed at impact. I've tried holding the club a bit firmer with the left hand, but that causes tension which further messes things up. I'm thinking about re-gripping with some mid-size grips...but I'm hesitant to do so, being that that would be a large investment...one I'm not even sure will work. if anyone has any suggestions as to what i can do or if you think the re-gripping idea is sound...please chime in and let me know. many thanks in advance.

Just regrip one club (6 or 7) and see if your suspicion is true

Also, checkout the pinggolf website and use their static fitting charts on the grip to see what they recommend.

...and stop flapping your wrists

If you're closed at impact, that means the clubface is pointing to the sky at the top of your swing. Is your wrist flat or bowed? Bowing it will shut the face.

Re: club turns at apex of swing...

You are changing the angles between the back of your hands and your forearm. Flapping your wrists like Sammyboy said. Swing up to the top of your back swing in slow motion. What do those angles look like. Is your left wrist bowed back a lot rather than cupped? If you have a neutral grip your left wrist is going to have to be bowed to close up the club face that much. If you have a very strong grip you would really have to do some work to get a bow in the wrist. Check your grip, strong or weak then you can determine what angle the left wrist need to have. My sense is that your grip is either very weak or very strong.

Re: club turns at apex of swing...

i've got a little bowing of the wrists, but i don't think that is the issue. i don't know how to explain it, but i feel as if my hands shift the handle of the club counter clock-wise, closing the face at impact. that's why when i tighten the left hand, it stays square to open (the face). the problem with this is that it doesn't always work, and that gives me heaps of inconsistency. hence, that is why i'm considering larger grips. funny thing though, this problem materialized less than a year ago, and for the last few months i couldn't for the life of me figure out why my iron shots were going left. hybrids and woods...including driver all go straight, occasionally i get a hook or slice but i attribute that to poor setup. anyhow, thanks for all the input so far...please keep it coming. thanks!

Re: club turns at apex of swing...

Do you have unusually long fingers or big hands? Most clubs come with medium grips so changing them may help you. Do you think the club is actually spinning in your hands?

Do you understand how the cupped versus bowed left wrist opens and closes the club face? Take your swing to the top in slow motion then stop. Put an exaggerated bow in your left wrist and watch the club face close. Put an exagerated cup in the wrist and watch the club face open. If we don't get it back square at impact a hook or slice will result unless we do some other arm or body adjustments on the way down. I try to get the club face square at the top and maintain that wrist position until impact.

to some extent. i know the more you cup, the more the face is open...i think. anyway, that has been a problem for me, and i've worked hard to try to correct this. even bought one of those swing gloves...

i feel it spinning in my hand, my palm shifts, and the club closes. strangest thing...
when i focus on not doing this, the rest of my swing goes to heck...inside out, open face, fat or thin shots, etc.
